1. Dizziness and cramps

Q: I have been very dizzy since day 2 and am very nauseous as well. Also, people are saying that they are not having gas pains, but I have been having bad cramps. I really want the benefits of the full 10 days, but the dizziness kind of scares me. Thank you for any advice you can give me.

A: Dizziness is a fairly common occurrence among people who do the Master Cleanse or fast. (The Master Cleanse is actually a very powerful form of juice fasting.) Fasting is known to lower blood pressure. Dr. Joel Fuhrman, who frequently fasts his patients and wrote "Fasting and Eating for Health," cautions his patients during fasts to get up slowly from sitting or lying down because of lightheadedness.

Abdominal cramps can be the result of either using a strong herbal laxative tea (100% senna rather than 50% senna) or gas from old waste being dissolved. Only drink 100% senna tea if you need an extra boost to eliminate, otherwise use an herbal blend with 50% senna. If it's gas from old waste, it will probably not continue for more than a few days.

2. Pregnancy and the Master Cleanse?

Q: What if you happen to get pregnant during the fast or right after? Could that be harmful for you or for the baby?

A: Burroughs makes no restrictions on the Master Cleanse. I'm just a bit more conservative. So, to be on the safe side, I recommend pregnant or nursing women do not do the Master Cleanse at that time. Instead, I recommend they do a "mechanical" colon cleanse, such as one that uses bentonite clay or psyllium husks to sweep out old waste. However, I know of no actual problems due to doing the Master Cleanse during that time.

Not only is there no problem with getting pregnant right after the cleanse, it's been noted that fasting is an old time (and inexpensive) remedy for infertility! In fact, I know of two women who were having trouble getting pregnant before the cleanse who conceived within two or three months of completing the Master Cleanse.

3. Diarrhea

Q: On the first day I had some diarrhea and had some again today. I read in the Master Cleanse book that if diarrhea was a problem to skip the tea and SWF. I've only had diarrhea in the morning and none the rest of the day. I get anxiety attacks and ever since I've had them I get diarrhea ever so often for a few days. I believe that both of these are also Candida related. I'm not sure the diarrhea is actually from the cleanse and would like to stay on it despite the diarrhea. Any advice and help you could give would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

A: You say you only have diarrhea in the morning. That leads me to believe that it's just the salt water flush. Watery eliminations are very, very common on the Master Cleanse. This is not diarrhea. True diarrhea would be watery eliminations throughout the day. In that case, yes, you should omit the tea and flush until the diarrhea is gone.

As for the anxiety attacks, diarrhea and Candida, they could be related. Diarrhea is nature's way of rapidly cleansing the body of toxins, etc. If your anxiety attacks disappear after the diarrhea, then it is quite possible they are just a detox symptom.

4. Is senna herb potentially harmful?

Q: Someone told me that senna is potentially harmful because the intestines will no longer function normally after some time. (I am happy to report that mine are still functioning properly after a 21-day Master Cleanse.)

A: I've frequently heard people question the use of senna for the Master Cleanse. Even the tea boxes contain cautions. However, in the more than 600 people I've coached, I don't know of anyone who's actually not resumed normal (or better) bowel movements after the cleanse. Although sometimes it takes two or three days before the first bowel movement after the cleanse, but I believe this is due to the lack of any bulk being eaten and the thoroughness of the cleanse.

5. Is orange juice a bad way to break the fast?

Q: Someone told me that orange juice is the worst type of juice to drink after a fast.

A: Actually, Dr. Herbert Shelton, who fasted some 30,000 patients, says that orange juice is one of the best ways to break a fast. Besides Burroughs, several others talk about it being either the best or one of the best ways to break the fast.

6. How frequently can I do the Master Cleanse?

Q: I'm wondering how quickly I can go back on the cleanse? My arthritis felt almost non-existent while I was on the fast, and now that I am finished, it has come back fast and furious. By the way, I have no more taste or cravings for caffeine, alcohol or soda pop!

A: Congratulations on the benefits of your cleanse. Burroughs says three or four times a year. What's crucial is that you have enough alkaline minerals (mostly calcium and magnesium) to neutralize the acidic toxins your body is releasing. If you don't have enough, your body will try to take if from your teeth or bones! Victoria Boutenko has a wonderful new book out called "Green For Life" which talks about drinking green smoothies. They are a great way to build alkaline reserves as well as a strict vegetarian diet.
