30 Day Juice Fast Journey -- Day Twelve by Dazzle .....
I never understood why Wimpy, on Popeye, went around begging for hamburgers when he could have begged for cheeseburgers...

I want to plant a garden. I have the area in my backyard already picked out. It would be a small 10x15 foot plot, which could be huge as far as production is concerned if the garden is well planned out. The last time I had a garden was when we lived in Yadkinville, North Carolina, about sixteen years ago. Oh, I've grown edibles many times, but, I became a pot gardener. And for you cannabis connoisseurs, I mean pot as in container. But now I want a real, genu-wine, in-the-ground garden.
A dear friend of mine, Jenn, subcribed me to a fabulous catalogue that specializes in Heirloom vegetables, herbs and fruit seeds/plants. Jennifer unexpectedly passed away this past December 2005, truly shaking me to the core. But this gorgeous catalogue is just one more thing I can use to keep the spirit of my dear friend close by. The catalogue is called The Seed Savers Exchange: Passing on our Vegetable Heritage. It's definitely candy for the eye for those who are interested in growing some of their own herbs and veggies. The pictures show vegetables with stripes, polka dots, plaids and multicolored warts. Leaves with neon colors that are not found in a 64 ct crayon box... and the beauty of it all is not only are these plants eye catchers, but you can actually eat them and they taste like the veggies our great-grandmothers ate! Green beans that grow a stunning purple but turn green before your very eyes while they cook. Egg plant in every color and stripe, just about. The peppers, oh my, the variety, the exquisite design of each one is something to behold. The gourds! They rock! No, they're not edible, but they're so interesting while growing, they'll draw everyone's eyes. And imagine all the birdhouses one could make!
So, I really want to plant a garden. And I want to try my hand at some of these poetic vegetables and heirloom plants. Since there is only two of us now, there should be alot of surplus to freeze to use during the humid, hot, rainy, hurricane traumatized summers when a vegetable garden in southwest Florida is not adviseable and enough to give away to my daughter's family and my bachelor son, in addition to the neighbors.
Really, there should be no reason why everyone can't have a garden, whether it is an acre or a few containers growing tomatoes, bell peppers and rosemary. Everyone should have at least one tomato and pepper plant growing. People in the north could grow miniature, fruit bearing citrus in containers and have free, fresh, organic citrus, something northerners don't really have access to unless it's via their produce dept at their favorite grocery store. Even then, according to my northern friends, it's not very fresh and it can be expensive. People embarking on a vegetarian diet, a RAW lifestyle, or people who just want to have lots of fresh vegetables available can save bundles of money just by growing some of their more favorite edibles. For many people that could be tomatoes, peppers, melons, squash, cucumbers, all easy to grow in containers on balconies, front porches, lanais, patios, and in windows where the sun plays the most during the cold months. Even more lovely than saving money by growing some of our own vegetables, are the powerful healing nutrients found in fresh, ripened on the vine, organic produce. And the taste! Okay, I need to stop here... I'm not going to talk about tasty delicious savory food tonight.
Yesterday I spoke about how the RAW crowd may have a new semi-convert. I couldn't remember the authors of these wonderful blogs that have so inspired me, so I today I gathered that information to share. Anyone interested in coming off a prolonged juice fast or anyone who is interested in trying out the RAW lifestyle or incorporating more raw foods into their diet really should take the time to look over these blogs. The owners share their trials and triumphs, their tips and tricks and if that isn't enough, they're very generous with their recipes.

Heal Thyself/Sacred Woman is not necessarily pertaining to the RAW lifestyle, per se, however, it's a fantastic holistic addition to any healing oriented modality. All of these blogs are well worth reading for anyone needing information and inspiration to face the challenge of changing and improving their diets and nutritional lifestyles. I certainly enjoyed reading them.
Today is Day 12 on my 30 day juice fast. Almost halfway through. I'm going produce shopping tomorrow. I'm excited! Like a kid in a toy store. I'm imagining all these fresh new broths and juices that are going to have to keep me going for another two weeks and change. The last couple of days, while running out of this and that, my taste buds are beginning to make demands and I don't like that, because I don't have what they want, and that can lead to serious complications if I am not diligent. Chekkle's are open only on weekends and so off I go tomorrow.
I've been seriously wanting some pineapple and mangoes. I thought about juicing them, maybe including some peaches with the mangoes. And then freezing the juice into popcycles or sorbet. I bet that would be tasty. Maybe the faux ice cream would even hit the spot during those times when we're watching a late movie and we get the munchies. The juice is thick, so maybe it would freeze creamy like. I've never done this before, so this is a new thing to add to all the variety I need, if the frozen juices turn out well.
I've not been doing anything different these past several days fasting. Still chugging down the broths, the herbal and citrus pepper teas, and 16 oz juices three times a day. Although I am probably going to knock one of those juices off the menu in a few days... increase the detox a bit. The clothes I began this fast with are definitely loose and hanging. In a couple days I may not even be able to wear them. I've lost 12 pounds of fugly fat and toxins. A whole size for me. Every ten pounds, give or take, on or off my butt, is about one size. I am hoping to have, at least, lost three sizes by the time I come off this fast.
My son is having a birthday at the end of February. The plans are my husband and I are taking everyone out to dinner. I come off this fast February 14. I have about a week and half of getting back into solid foods before this event. I will still need to be smart about what I choose to eat that close to having come off a 30 day juice fast. My experience is regular food will still taste wrong, too salty, too sweet, too fake, too lardy, anyway. Fortunately, there are many salads, fresh vegetables and fruits I can easily choose off a restaurant menu. Even a simple soup could work. Definitely not a cheeseburger. You know, I never understood why Wimpy, on Popeye, went around begging for hamburgers when he could have begged for cheeseburgers. Hmmm... certainly something to ponder.
I took a walk this evening around the neighborhood apparently at the same time many people were cooking dinner. I smelled fried chicken (FRIED CHICKEN), pork chops (PORK CHOPS), something Italian (SOMETHING ITALIAN), steaks with onions (STEAKS WITH ONIONS). I couldn't believe it, I was bombarded with all these succulent scents of family dinners. I quickly walked home. That was as dangerous as trying to cross the street during a Category 4 hurricane. I certainly won't be taking any strolls during that time anymore.
So much for not talking about tasty delicious savory food tonight.
Have a beautiful, peace filled evening, everyone!
