Me and My Bladder by LightLizard .....

When Nature Calls....

Years ago, when I was on the road with a band, we were driving thru the Rocky Mountains, December, 1977.

It was snowy and very dangerous on those roads -at that time of the year.

It was about 2AM, christmas eve and we had left Calgary Alberta, and were heading to the coast to play in Vancouver, BC, for new year's eve.

I suddenly had to pee, with a vengance!

We were travelling in 'convoy' with our equipment truck and roadies, a 9-seater van and the band leader's Cadillac Seville, which I was riding in.
We all pulled over so I could pee.

I walked a bit into the bush and did my thing.

As I let go, I looked up at the full moon. The sillouette of the rocky mountains against the moon seemed strange and eerie. I could see a face in the shape of the mountain I was looking at-the face of a native elder with a look of warning in it's expression. I had the chills from it and the hairs on the back of my neck really did stand up!

I finished and ran as fast as i could, back to the car...

About 3 minutes down the road we came upon an accident that had just occurred!

The smoke and steam was still rising from it, and you could tell by the tracks in the snow that he had lost control and wandered all over the road before crashing.

There was a native man in the front, his wife and child in the back seat, all cut and bleeding.

The driver had lost control and run off the road into the base of a mountain. The car was totalled, every bit of glass broken and the vehicle was just crumpled, like discarded tissue.

They had been driving in the opposite direction that we were going in, and if I hadn't had to pee, we would have very likely been involved in the accident! Or, at least one of our vehicles would have been.

We saw that they were all unconscious, but breathing. The car engine was off.

We had 'cb' radios and contacted the nearest ambulance service, which got there in about 15 minutes.

We checked later and found that they were all ok... cuts and bruises, a few broken bones for the driver, (who, it turned out had been drinking- hey, it was Christmas Eve, after all!).

That scene haunts me still, and i am just grateful that we had a chance to help, because there was absolutely no other traffic on the road at that time and date.

I'm also grateful for my bladder.
