Is too much stress stressing you out?

Don’t Worry, Be Happy!

Stress is the biggest cause of dis-ease in America. The hectic lifestyle we all seem to live is not normal! We put so much stress on ourselves that any added stress from the external world just pushes us over the edge and into the abyss! We feel overwhelmed, anxious, unorganized and unappreciated. We’ve talked about the importance of leading the body toward an alkaline state and yet the biggest producer of acids in the body is stress!

Stress causes our bodies to produce a hormone called cortisol. We’re meant to be in a state of ‘fight or flight’ only for a few moments, until we escape from the tiger or run inside during a thunderstorm. After the threat passes, our body stops producing the cortisol and cleanses it, and its toxic by products, out of our system.
Today, the stress never passes. When the modern definition of stress is being stuck in traffic with the fear of being late, Johnny got an F on his report card and I feel guilty because I did not have time to help him, the boss doesn’t appreciate the fact that I take work home, there is another tragic story on the news and the cat is sick, all while you don’t have enough money for the tutor, the vet, the car payment and the rent and you’ve just become a walking time bomb. Something is likely to explode!

Overweight is caused by stress. Not only does that stress hormone make it harder to lose weight but also, the first thing we reach for is chocolate to make us feel better! Arthritis, heart attacks, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, asthma, and ulcers and all "auto-immune" conditions are just a few of the dis-eases that have been linked to stress.

Let’s all just slow down! First of all, we try to do too much. Look at your schedule and see what you can eliminate. Learn how to say no! Take a mental health day. Its more than your mental health you will be preserving. You are the only one with the power to simplify your life.

Eat more natural foods. Many chemicals in prepared foods are excito-toxins. That is a fancy word for poisons that cause your system to run on your adrenals. Many of these excito-toxins are also addictive, making you crave the foods that contain them and causing a vicious cycle like a Merry-Go-Round gone berserk! Some common excito-toxins are monosodium glutamate (MSG) and aspartame (Nutra-Sweet). Others come from the chemicals used to process refined foods and aren’t even listed on the label because they’re not added to the product but rather leave their residue after the processing.

Soy protein isolate, for example, is made from genetically modified soybeans that are processed with hexane, a chemical similar to gasoline. Oh yum! Then they use this stuff to make protein drinks, shakes and protein bars. You’re forking over $5.00 per bar to poison yourself! Now that’s big business!

Walk more. Exercise is a great stress reliever in more ways than one. It lets you burn off steam but it also allows your body to eliminate some of the toxins it’s picked up along your hectic day.

Chamomile, Passion flowers, fennel seeds, feverfew, hops and marshmallow root make this a soothing combination. A good night’s sleep goes a long way to starting your day relaxed.

And throw away that alarm clock that jars you from your rest with the finesse of a jack hammer. How long does it take for your heart-rate to normalize after Crazy Jack the DJ screams a commercial in your face as his good morning wish? Invest in an alarm clock that plays a gentle tone that increases in volume gradually. Or one that wakes you with a slowly brightening light the way nature intended.
