More Juice (Cranberry) for the Urine

UTI prevention

For years, women have reached for a bottle of cranberry juice at the first sign of a urinary tract infection. Drinking a glass of cranberry juice seemed to not only help with an existing infection but to reduce the chances of having another urinary tract infection. But how much cranberry juice should a woman drink and how does it work?
Study: Researchers collected urine samples from symptom-free women before and after they drank a predetermined amount of cranberry juice (actually it was the ordinary 27% cranberry juice cocktail from the supermarket). E. coli bacteria and human bladder cells were then added to each urine sample. The point of the study was to see how many bacteria adhered to the bladder cells. Drinking 2 ounces of cranberry juice was not enough to produce any effect. Four ounces reduced the bacteria by 33%. Eight ounces reduced the bacteria by 71%. More juice resulted in less bacteria sticking to the bladder cells.
Comment: Lots of questions remain. Women still don't know how much cranberry juice to drink, when they should drink it and how often they should drink it to minimize their chances of having a urinary tract infection. (Also which brand do the researchers recommend?)
