Kite Fishing - flying a kite with fishing gear

Date:   6/20/2007 5:31:03 PM ( 17 y ago)

I am nearly 50yrs old, and as I get to that hallmark age I am feeling that it is more and more important and meaningfull to 'act like a kid'.

Sure, I do feel the social pressure to conform to "being the typical 50 yr. old" personality, a role model for the grandkids and an icon of responsibility for my own sons. That might mean denying my 'natural personality' in some ways, like restraining my enthusiasm for sillyness. Betraying my personality, in order to be seen as something that society wants me to be, is just not going to happen.

I have been rebelling against "normal" all my life, and now that the time has come when my age gives me a certain credibility I do not want to stop fighting my battles!!

...and all that is to "justify" the fact that I am a kite hobbiest.
Yup, I fly kites. Cheap ones.

I like it - the wind becomes something that you get to be very aware of in all its qualities, and the sky seems to be well within reach once I get a few hundred feet of line out. Natures biggest daily video display - the sky - has endless mystery and raises my consciousness of the hugeness of earth. Flying a kite puts me in touch with a larger natural earth than I normally experience.

I have two fields nearby that I can use for kite flying.

----

Technically, I will give a few tips that others might find usefull:

1]"KITE FISHING" - use a big fishing reel as the spool, attached to the bottom part of a fishing rod, with 10 or 15 pound fishing line attached to the kite. This really makes it easy to reel it in, to let it out, to control it. This is way better than a hand operated spool.
{funny story - my neighbor asked what the fishing gear and kite was for, and I tried to explain my setup. After 10 minutes he was still confused and finally asked: "so, have you ever actually caught a fish that way?"]. ["no"]

2] How HIGH? - I put on a new spool of line, 15lb., that is 400 yards long, and that is 1200 feet. WOW!!!
I can't wait to get that all out, if possible. I did get out all the previous spool I had on, on one fine day with a perfect breeze, but there was only about 600 to 800 feet on then. The kite was a tiny dot way up there, and nearly straight up too. [sometimes it gets "downwind" and loses all that elevation]. Man, 1200 feet would be a mess if I lost control!!

questions? - email me please.

SAFETY - allways be aware of the power lines, and simply do not fly the kite if your line will end up across power lines 'if it goes down' [and they will all go down at times...]. It is a serious danger to anyone who might touch that line before you gather it in.
