COMMENT: Are You Better Off Now?

Dear A-Letter Reader:
The inimitable Oscar Wilde wrote in one of his plays: "Experience is the
name everyone gives to their mistakes."

As the fourth anniversary of the 9-11-01 terrorists attacks passes, the
people of the United States have every reason to question whether their
"leaders" and governments have learned anything from those thousands of
needless deaths and from events of the ensuing four years.

If the bureaucratic morass of the before and after of Hurricane Katrina
is the example, our so-called leaders have shown themselves to be
woefully unprepared for terrorists -- or for any major catastrophe,
natural or man-made.

Ronald Reagan scored big in the 1980 presidential debates, (how long ago
that seems), when he asked America, as the ineffectual Jimmy Carter
stood by smiling: "Are you better off now than you were four years ago?"

George Bush and his officials assured us that once they created a
massive "Homeland Security" bureaucracy at a cost of billions, we
would all be safer. They gave us color coded threat levels and that
new and improved FEMA.

They assured us that once government took over airline security, air
travelers would be safer. (Tell that to anyone who has had to deal with
the rudeness, stupidity and secret no-fly lists of the TSA thugs).

Has America's government met the challenges of 9-11? Have we got Osama
bin Laden? Is national security more important than pork barrel
politics? Have politicians put aside their petty power squabbles and
united for the common good? Are we bogged down in endless wars at home
and abroad -- the wrong wars with the wrong strategies?

In the weeks after 9-11 we wrote: "America is threatened by complacency
and ignorance. When the candlelight vigils and troops in America's
streets are gone, the real legacy of 9-11, 2001 will be determined by
how a free people reacted to this greatest of all provocations. We fear
for our country and for the world."

Yet in the PATRIOT Act and with unconstitutional detention and torture
of terrorism suspects, we have sacrificed the very principles that we
were supposed to be defending.

The Sovereign Society was founded expressly to enhance personal and
financial freedoms -- liberties that, then and now, are being leached
away by the growing cancer of incompetent, nay, by malevolent, power
hungry government.

Several days too late, police were out confiscating firearms in New
Orleans, even though gun ownership is legal in Louisiana. What most
Americans don't realize (though we've tried to tell them), is that we
have all been disarmed -- to the extent that we have not moved some or
all of our assets offshore to safety. Gandhi said: "The individual has a
soul, but the State is a soulless machine, it can never be weaned from
the violence to which it owes its very existence."

It took the actuality of those long predicted breaks in levees and
massive flooding to convince the drowning people of New Orleans that
years of warnings were not just true, but at last at hand. By then the
only choice for too many was life or death.

What are you waiting for? Now is the time not just to plan, but to act.
Unlike government, we really are here to help you. While there's still
time....

That's the way it looks from here.
