With collective dreaming, the dreamer dreams not only for themselves but for humanity as a whole. I experienced this when working with Gregg Echols after a period of not being able to remember my dreams.

Last week I was experiencing some very intense dreams, and woke up with my bedding in total disarray, an indication of a very restless, toss-and-turn night. I felt exhausted, as if I'd been working all night. Unfortunately, upon awakening in the morning, I couldn't remember my dreams! This happened for three nights in a row, and after the third night my exhaustion increased to the point that I was barely able to function during the day. Additionally, I was extremely irritable and was unlivable with (just ask my children and my friends!).
I called up my friend Gregg Echols and asked for assistance. After I told him what was happening, he worked with me over the phone in order to help me get past my blockage in remembering my dreams, and to ease the nightly cycle of sleeping, dreaming and remembering.
By using his voice and instructing me in deep breathing, Gregg led me into a deep meditative state where I was able to melt into complete relaxation. While in this state Gregg encouraged me to connect to my own energies and Inner Vision, which I experienced as "seeing" colors. His manner was very gentle throughout. After working with me for what turned out to be close to an hour (I had no concept of the passage of time while in the altered state) he slowly brought me back into a "waking" state. I felt relaxed and my mood had improved.
That night, I experienced a three-part dream which I was able to remember in the morning upon awakening. Refreshed after a good night's sleep with no thrashing about, I felt calm and the irritability was gone. I took the time to write the dream down.
I phoned Gregg later in the day and told him of my dream, which he then helped me to understand. The "interpretation" process Gregg utilizes is not the usual "dream analysis" one finds from most practitioners. Instead, Gregg looks at the meaning of dreams from the perspective of not only the individual having the dream, but what meaning the dream may hold for humanity as a whole. He calls this process of dreaming for all of humankind "collective dreaming."
From his website Collective Dreaming: Understanding our inner worlds as a link to our larger community

"...our dreams are no longer the individualized portraits of our daily struggles and frustrations, but are collective messages for the entirety of our planet. Like the blind men touching the elephant, we are each given access to different aspects of our collective body, bringing back different sensations and images from the dreaming world.
...At no other time in our modern history have we been given access to such deep layers of the world’s psyche and universal psyche as well... These are not the dreams of Freud and Jung. These are messages from our Higher Selves, from our collective human body.
...Our dreaming is collective. We help each other by paying attention to our own dreams, and then not only sharing them with others, but working together as a community to understand them together. In these times of impending global catastrophe, this is the most cost-effective, timely, and moral way to save Planet Earth—and ourselves. Do we have a choice not to listen to our dreams?
The intention of the Collective Dreaming website is to foster conscious dreamwork in each individual as we work together in shaping a new world."
