PSYCHE AND SPINE
(Excerpt from the book ‘Wonders take a little longer, Dr. Michael Graulich)
The psyche (soul) influences our spine and joints.
Thus the psyche has a direct influence on our immune system and our circulation, on pain processes and pain sensations and on the emergence and development of diseases.
Not only damages at the spine and joints, but also organic diseases and pain-related diseases, certainly influence our psyche.
The nature of psychical disturbances influences the nature of the damage at the spine and the joints and with it on the nature of an organic disease or pain syndromes.
The type of damage at the spine and joints and organic illness and pain syndromes in turn influence psychical disturbances which can be clearly defined.
In their subconscious people have always been aware of these connections. This fact is demonstrated in our (German) language which refers to them through many different sayings and idioms. In a paperback with the title ‘Backache – Holistic Aid’ by Martin J. Waibel, I discovered the following very interesting list which I would like to quote from, after having made a few small changes:
• You can slide down my back (get lost!)
• To strengthen someone’e back
• Fear is sitting in my neck
• It runs cold down my back
• Someone has bent his back
• To take something lightly on the shoulder
• Break someone’s back
• To hold out one’s head for something (take the blame for something.)
• The neck blows of life (life is hard.)
• He stands with both legs (feet) firm in life
• To load something on the shoulder of another
• To have no backbone
• To bear one’s cross
• To have no standpoint
• To show someone the forehead (face s.o. squarely)
• To give someone the cold shoulder
• Bowed down with grief, etc.
A note to English readers! Some of these sayings – which have been literally translated – will find echoes in similar English sayings but, clearly, others will not register their meanings outside the German language usage.
This list which is certainly far from complete, shows that everyday problems connected with the psyche have indeed something to do with the spine and its shape. Common parlance defines quite accurately where the cause for some ailment is to be found. It becomes clear that any deviations of the spine and blockages are not only a result of incorrect patterns of movement, but that our mental state also plays an important role which in turn is influenced by our environment, our family and professional life. Of course, the basic human characteristics of an individual are also connected with the spine, as people react very differently to situations in life, depending on their individual character. Also body language is able to affect the shape of our spine.
A human being, when threatened, automatically pushes his head forward to ‘show the forehead to his opponent’. If this posture is maintained for a prolonged period, it leads inevitably to a steep posture of the cervical spine and produces pain.
When fate weighs heavily on the shoulders of someone, his body is pressed forward towards the ground. The consequence is not a scoliosis, but a kyphosis, i.e. a backwards deviation of the spine and the formation of a hump. A scoliosis can occur, if in addition evasive or defensive movements are made.
These kinds of patterns of movement are not damaging in themselves if they are cnly made for a short time. However, as people are not usually able to change their life situations, they often unconsciously assume one of the above postures which in the course of time manifest themselves as permanent deviations of the spine. These cases just described only give a small insight into this whole problem since there is a multitude of different behavior patterns related to the workings of the mind.
