Taking responsibility for your illness so you can take responsibility for getting better

Do things happen to us or did we make them happen? I constantly ask myself this question and it's an important one to come to grips with.
On the one hand you can absolve yourself of any responsibility and just say HIV and AIDS happens. And most people would not hold you to blame any more than they would blame you for getting a cold. Here's the rub: the minute you absolve yourself of responsibility for getting sick, you might also be relinquishing your responsibility for getting better. If you can't prevent yourself from getting sick, how then do you suddenly become responsible for getting better. The fact is most people don't. And worse, they charge someone else with the responsibility of making them feel better.
Our choice of words is partly responsible for our actions. The words blame and guilt should be erradicated from any person's vocabulary who desires to take responsibility for the conditions that he's in.
People who say that their illness was the best thing that ever happened to them are awakening to the fact that they own and have the power within them to fix anything that is wrong with them and their lives. Discovery, enlightenment in it's many forms and responsibility can completely change a person.
To the people who know me well, I am a different person. I am forgiving, loving, helpful. I am less judgemental. I am relaxed, pensive, thoughtful and thankful. I am less driven to be "successful". I'm happier. I completely accept that I am responsible...happy to do it. So now...onward.
