"We all know by now that fossil fuels contribute to pollution and global warming. So now that we have clean alternatives like wind power, it’s time to flip the switch.
Wind power does not pollute, it is domestically produced and it is renewable. Wind power is the fastest growing source of energy in the world, and its prices are competitive with the cost of electricity from new coal-fired power plants. With additional investment in research and development, the cost of wind power could drop to as little as 2.5 cents a kilowatt-hour within the next few years. In fact, wind could supply more than three times the total amount of electricity currently produced in the United States.
Development of America’s first offshore wind project will move ahead. The Coast Guard Reauthorization bill passed in Congress June 27, 2006, after an amendment giving the Governor of Massachusetts the power to veto the project was removed.
This amendment would have given Governor Mitt Romney, who has gone on record opposing the project, a damaging final say over the fate of Cape Wind. The changes made to this amendment give the Coast Guard a final say over any possible navigational hazards of the wind project.
The bill passed with a vote of 413 to 0.
This is a positive step forward, but we won’t declare victory until we have Cape Wind producing clean energy for Massachusetts.
This offshore wind project, located in Nantucket Sound, will provide 75 percent of Cape Cod’s energy needs with clean and safe wind power. As America’s first offshore wind project, Cape Wind will set an important precedent in the fight to turn the tide of global warming. Imagine clean power reducing the need for the Cape’s current oil and gas burning power plant, which caused a major oil spill in Buzzard’s Bay in 2003, dumping 100,000 gallons of oil into the bay.
