ECO-Action:Save Whales! by Liora Leah .....

Over twenty years ago, I remember seeing bumper stickers that said "Save the Whales". Unfortunately today, whales are still endangered all over the world. Help save these magnificant creatures from destruction!

ECO-ACTION: Japan Wants to Hunt Humpback and Fin Whales

Several countries hold the key votes in the July 20th IWC meeting to pass or reject Japan's proposal to hunt humpback whales.  These countries are very sensitive to external opinion, and they can be swayed to vote to protect the whales, instead of slaughter them.

Contact representatives from the Swiss, Danish, South Korean, & Chinese governments.  Please ask them to support the IWC Conservation Committee and to reject Japan's proposal to expand its cruel whale hunt to include humpback and fin whales!

Sign a petition to the Swiss, Danish, South Korean, & Chinese governments.

ECO-ACTION: The city of Ulsan, South Korea, is Considering Building a Whale-meat Processing Plant

Every year, one to six whales are caught accidentally in fishing nets in countries without a vested interest in whale meat. The number of whales "accidentally" caught in Korea number almost 100 times more than this. Dead whales worth up to $100,000 create a huge incentive for the deliberate drowning of whales.  Send a letter to the mayor of Ulsan, South Korea urging him to decline plans to process whale meat in his city!

ECO-ACTION: Save the Gray Whale Nursery

Mexico's San Ignacio Lagoon is the only gray whale birthing ground left on Earth that has not been despoiled by human encroachment. Five years ago, NDRC's BioGems Campaign stopped Mexico and the Mitsubishi Corporation from building the world's largest salt factory on the banks of this irreplaceable natural treasure. But the whales' nursery never received permanent protection. Today, there are signs that San Ignacio Lagoon may soon be threatened by plans for industrialization.

NRDC and Mexican citizens are embarking on an ambitious campaign to safeguard the whales' lagoon -- by buying up the development rights to the surrounding one million acres and putting them off-limits to industry forever!

This is NOT a petition drive. NRDC is seeking funds from the public to assist in this effort. For more information, go to: http://www.savebiogems.org/baja/
