Dear CureZone family:

I am a member of several environmental advocacy organizations and receive many urgent eco-action alerts. Instead of posting them one at a time, I will be summarizing 3 to 4 eco-actions in  2 to 3 sentences each, and include links for you to find out more information and to take action.  Usually these actions involve petition-signing or sending e-mails to government officials or industry executives, and don't require a lot of time or effort. Occasionally I will include an action that involves fundraising for a specific cause; if this is the case I will identify it as such.

Here's to a healthier, cleaner, better protected environment!  Thanking you in advance,

Love,

Liora Leah

ECO-ACTION:  PESTICIDES SPRAYED ON FARM WORKERS

On May 12, 2005 twenty-three women farm workers were exposed to toxic pesticides--including one chemical that may cause reproductive harm--as they worked in a Kern County, California vineyard. The pesticide application firm, San Joaquin Helicopters, has a long record of infractions. In 1996, the state levied a fine of $60,000 and suspended the licenses of two San Joaquin Helicopters employees for spraying pesticides on 1,100 vineyard workers. Since 1989, the applicator has also been fined on eight occasions for pesticide infractions.

Take Action:  Go to the United Farm Workers website to sign a petition to the California Department of Pesticide Regulation calling for an investigation of San Joaquin Helicopters and anyone else found to be responsible for this acute poisoning incident:

ECO-ACTION: SAVE THE GRAY WHALE NURSERY!

Mexico's San Ignacio Lagoon is the only gray whale birthing ground left on Earth that has not been despoiled by human encroachment. Five years ago, NDRC's BioGems Campaign stopped Mexico and the Mitsubishi Corporation from building the world's largest salt factory on the banks of this irreplaceable natural treasure. But the whales' nursery never received permanent protection. Today, there are signs that San Ignacio Lagoon may soon be threatened by plans for industrialization.

NRDC and Mexican citizens are embarking on an ambitious campaign to safeguard the whales' lagoon -- by buying up the development rights to the surrounding one million acres and putting them off-limits to industry forever.

This is NOT a petition drive. NRDC is seeking funds from the public to assist in this effort. For more information, go to: http://www.savebiogems.org/baja/

This fundraising effort is sponsored by National Resource Defense Council
