Lets see where we were on my road of life... Oh ya, on a Navy destroyer on station, some where in the world...

  Sorry for the delay....     Life goes on and we try to reflect on where we have been, and some of the Ys of life...  will get on with my saga so stay tuned for details ...  Some more neat pics too...

In the photo this is the bow of the destroyer as it moves into some heavy weather...   Looking on the deck on either side of the forward 5 Inch Gun mount you will see the spent shell {The brass cylinders} casings from firing...  These are sent out the back of the mount; note the dark area center bottom, then roll around the deck to be picked up later....  The 5 Inch shell {Bog bullet} the part that gets sent toward a target, weight appox. 70 Lbs...    These consist of several types...  The idea of having a separate power casing and a selective projectile; allows a different shell to be selected for different events....  The I.V. is better than a mile a second... BTW normal firearm has about  an I.V. of between 2000 to 3000 Ft per sec ....  

i.e. Color it gone..... It has a Nitro Cellulose explosive....

 Ex. there are "Star shells" these are used at night to light up an area,  it consists of a very large flare type suspended from a parachute { quite a pretty site to see}, "AA Common" which is anti aircraft, it has different type fuses to hit aircraft,  "BLP" which is a blank load used for spotting, it is filled with sand { spotting is the shell fired first to see how close we were to the desired target... not the store, DUH!}, then there were the nasty "Anti Personal" rounds which are really a 70 Lb hand grenade that explodes about 50 ft. above the ground and tears up the area below....   We also had "Armor Piercing" which is used against a "Harden Target" usually a concrete Bunker, it has a delayed secondary explosive charge to penetrate the target...  A real bad day for those in the buncker....  Certain other shells were available but seldom used.... You might guess what some of these were about...  DUH!!   

No matter which one; we sent it was a bad hair day for who ever was on the receiving end... DUH!!
