My original focus when I began this blog was to recount my journey so far with using primarily vibrational approaches to improving my health after receiving a diagnosis of a serious illness from my HMO Physician in October 2004. I was progressing reasonably well, as evidenced by regular testing at my HMO's lab, as well as feeling full of energy and healthy on a day to day level.

But then after I started this blog, I went in to my HMO lab for yet another blood test (I go in every 6 weeks) and received news that my blood glucose and cholesterol levels were up. My reaction to this was classically fear-based, but once I moved through the short tunnel of fear I created for myself, I found that there is life and hope on the other side, and one test with raised levels is not in itself cause for alarm.

Thus I have made a choice to continue on the alternative path. I am very careful to do everything possible to work toward improving my health. As I have discussed before, I exercise daily. Walking mostly. I want to add in something more aerobic, and will do so this week.

I am seeing my acupuncturist weekly, to keep balanced and keep my chi (life force) flowing. That's especially important.

I've not yet attained anything resembling perfection with my eating choices, but I am happy to report some progress in that arena. Attaining nutritional knowledge (do any of us ever have enough nutritional knowledge?) and always being open to new nutritional knowledge, and being conscious about what I eat based on this nutritional knowledge is absolutely essential. Here's a good example: the Splenda issue. One of your popular bloggers here, Michele Deradune, is an old friend of mine and she sent me an email about the dangers of Splenda last month. I had been using Splenda exclusively as a sugar substitute for over a year, and the information she sent me was respectable and verifiable. I stopped using Splenda immediately and researched other possible sugar substitutes. I have been hypoglycemic since the early 70's and thus have always limited my consumption of sugar.

My research revealed that Xylitol and Stevia are both pure and non-toxic substitutes for sugar. Xylitol is better for baking, as it is in crystalline form and does not lose it's sweetness during the baking process. Stevia is good for most other purposes but appears to lose sweetness when heated.

I definitely feel better since giving up Splenda. That was helpful. I had no idea that sucralose (main ingredient of Splenda) is made by processing sugar with chlorine!

I can't believe it's taken me this long to meander around to my topic for today! Yesterday when I wrote about my little adventure at the art party, I briefly mentioned that I have chosen not to consume alcohol & other drugs for over 11 years now. I suppose that in relation to that I would conclude that dealing with health issues can be a "down" in recovery, but in finding alternative health treatments that actually work this down can be transformed to an "up". It takes time, dedication, and focus; but it can be done and it can be maintained.

And I am here to prove it. Some eating habits that impact our health negatively and yet we keep indulging ourselves could be seen as addictions. I can use the same strengths I developed to cope with my substance addictions to continue to make more positive and life-sustaining eating choices.

I am so grateful to be on this path of recovery and that I have found such effective and hopeful alternative health practitioners and tools when there was an obstacle along the path.
