WE ARE INSPIRED
Beloved Colleagues and Friends,
I went to Istanbul with Rev. Wendy Craig-Purcell and Tom Zender of Unity as part of our strategic alliance with Association for Global New Thought. The purpose of the trip was to meet a group of spiritual leaders from the Holy Land―Christians, Muslims, Jews and Druze―each of whom is influential within extensive communities that range from the Druze community in the north to the Bedouins of the south, and from Jerusalem to the Palestinian authority. The group included a Christian priest, Bedouin imam, rabbi leader of the Ethiopian Jews in Israel, Sufi Sheikh, Druze Sheikh, Palestinian community leader, an American woman who is now an Israeli and a Muslim woman―both of whom are doing peacemaking work with women in the Holy Land―American Orthodox Jews living in Jerusalem who connected the group, and American Sufi Leaders who convened the meeting. The "Abrahamic Reunion" group came together in Barcelona last year at the Parliament of World Religions and amazed people just by standing and being seen in each other's company. In ways perhaps difficult for us to fully appreciate, they are moving beyond centuries of separation, intolerance, suspicion, violence and revenge to stand together for peace. Our purpose for being there was to build relationships and to see how their connection and work for peace with each other might connect with the Abraham Pilgrimage Project that AGNT is involved with. The three of us had about a half-hour or so to present the project and plant seeds of awareness about "New Thought", "Religious Science" and "Unity" as meaningful partners in their peace work because of our acceptance of and support for the rightness and validity of all spiritual paths. This particular gift of our spiritual path is something that has relevance in both local and global interfaith and peacemaking activities and will become even more important over time.
There were a number of moments that were precious to me―not the least of which was a trip to the Hamm am (traditional Turkish bath) by a spiritually-mixed group of men and women (we were in gender specific facilities.) It was wonderful to experience the bonding that took place once costumes and pretenses were removed! But the most moving moment for me was when the Abrahamic Reunion group, unprompted by the Americans present, presenced the effects of Hurricane Katrina and prayed for America and all the people impacted. Tears came to my eyes witnessing these people who have known such suffering and violence for so long take time out of their crucial work together to pray for our country and people, and to write the press release shared later in this newsletter.
The Ethiopian Rabbi added an acknowledgment for Americans being in the Holy Land in times of difficulty and said, "We want Americans to know they are part of our family."
Whether it local or global, family is what it is all about. I am so grateful you are mine.
Peace, love and blessings,
Dr. Kathy Hearn
