Seal Sighting by munificent .....

Another Cold Water Blog

I openwater swim in the San Diego Bay. It has been my practice since childhood. Today swam 1/2 mile rather than the 1/4 mile from a private (Peckham's) pier to the Southwestern Yacht Club and back. That water was colder than the last swim, but the air was magnificent, a warm breeze with dark blue water.

It is a second home to me, if ever there was an incarnation of sea mammal it still resonates today. I am 100% at home in the water. In some ways more than on land!

As I was swimming I noticed a large shape swimming along the shore line (I am out by the bouys -water is 40 ft deep or so) I flippered up to see what it was-and it returned the favor- I realized it was about a 300 pound harbor seal-not often seen in that shallow of water. Someone at the Yacht Club must be feeding him.

Next thing I knew he disappeared. I'd lost him, not an altogether comfortable feeling but not a panic either. He did not disappoint he surfaced about 20 ft from my flippers and took a good look at me. I wondered if he thought I was intruding on his feeding grounds? Or if I was a girl seal looking for a companion. They have been known to grab you and kinda ride you down to the bottom to play with you-....Or whatever.

Man his neck was about 24-30 inches around- I would be no match if it came to a game of tag. He swam behind me trying to figure out what I was doing there and then slipped under the water. Unfortunately, one cannot see the bottom so I had no idea where he would surface again. Under me, or next to me, or maybe just a grab and pull.....I had about 10 seconds of a bad moment then I took off on my regular route.

That was the end of the Seal Sighting. The have BIG teeth, I'm so glad he considered me no threat!
