forget about iraq, my war on poverty :-) by Ren .....

brief note about eating healthy while "poor"

I've made a number of observances about how easy it is to become unhealthy when you are working and not making a lot of money. You become obsessed about food or live on threadbare amounts of the wrong thing. You don't exercise because you surmise that you've worked hard enough. I used to wonder about that when I worked in the health food store. Now that I am working for 1/3 of what I used to make, doing more work but not intellectually stimulating work, I understand the mentality. Being a home health aide is demanding work but not intellectually stimulating work. Sometimes you get a coherent patient who can converse with you, but most of the time you are caring for the very elderly and people in mental decline due to diseases. Also, because home health aides are at the bottom rung of the ladder in the health care industry, you are treated accordingly and many people tend to think you are of an inferior intelligence. I was doing well moving towards a very healthy, polished diet when I was working and making money. For instance, if I craved chocolate, I could go to the health food store and either buy organic chocolate,a vegan carob snack or my favorite a Greens Plus bar that cost $2.79 each. I could buy juice on the road, vegan sandwiches, etc. When I worked at the heath food store, I had access to all the health products I needed and if I needed anything, I usually ordered it out of the catalog.

I have lots more to say later... I have a few things I need to get off my chest since I started this job. BTW, I have to say that when I say "poor" and "poverty", I'm being a bit sarcastic. The real poverty is to be found in places like the Sudan where people die because their corrupt governments starve them to death. I may not fully understand why I'm in this predicament now but I'm sure I'll have something to learn. Maybe I'll figure out how to eat a healthy diet and get exercise while working for little money.
