Maybe

Maybe...(i always thought)
maybe, someday..
Love would steal me away (in a dream..)
But maybe's (for me)
never came easily
& everybody knows they don't take girls like me.
So i guess maybe Love's not for me.

Babies.. ( i always thought)
came naturally
(thought there'd be one for me) (some fine day)
But Life has it's Schemes
& the vaguest of dreams
are alltogether broken (oh , so easily)
Guess that Babies aren't maybes' ( for me)

I never knew about Maybes'
But i knew they don't grow on trees,
& i know you can't borrow babies
& Love, .. they don't hand out for free.

Fortune ..(i always thought)
Fortune & Fame
would just fall on my name (magically)
But the gold that i gained,
& the road that was laid...
too often was for others so much better paved.
that's what fortune and fame
taught to me.

Cause i never knew of the lying...
(i never knew of the cost)
No. I never dreamed I'd be crying
(to somehow recapture the loss)

oh Starlight.. (i never thought)
held much delight
til i beheld the sight (in a dream)
of the great Peggy Lee
( & my mother, and me)
...hearing every note delivered so deliberately...
but then how could i know?
in the story she told?
the single greatest revelation to unfold..
was that maybe...(just maybe...)
oh, maybe !!
that someone was me !
