Peter Yarrow is the founder of
this wonderful Organization
to help our Kids
live in R-E-S-P-E-C-T
and develop EMOTIONAL MATURITY.

Peter Yarrow is the Peter
from Peter, Paul, and Mary.

"If I had a Hammer..."
and "Puff the Magic Dragon"
can also be heard on the download page.

I had a prophesy once when I met Peter
that these songs--that were instrumental in
the Peace Movement of the Vietnam Era would
help us get out of current disrespectful IMMATURE human
interactions, i.e, what we caLL WAR.

He is really a Very Great Whole Being
in the World.

I highly recommend these activities
and urge you to visit there website
and shed some tears over the Video.
I did years ago.

1. HURRICANE KATRINA - We are all extremely saddened by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Many of us want to know what we can do and how we can help. As educators our immediate challenge is to help our students cope with this tragedy. Please visit the links below for ideas, suggestions and strategies and write to: reply@operationrespect.org to let us know what you and your students are doing to help the victims of the hurricane. We will include some of your stories in our next e-newsletter to inspire others to initiate similar efforts in their schools.

2. "NO EMOTION LEFT BEHIND" An excellent op-ed piece in the August 16th New York Times by Timothy P. Shriver and Roger Weisberg underlined the critical importance of social and emotional learning. The article highlighted significant new research, "the largest ever quantitative analysis," indicating that social and emotional learning programs significantly improve students' academic performance. The article and other important information can be found on the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning website, http://www.casel.org. For schools that want to embark on a comprehensive, community-building approach, we urge you to look at CASEL's new "Rubric for SEL Implementation and Sustainability" on their home page.

3. OPERATION RESPECT SYMPOSIUM AND GALA: A SMASHING SUCCESS - The June 30th/July 1st event attracted over 200 symposium participants and over 300 gala dinner guests. The symposium focused on the theme, "What Works." We learned about the work of five stellar schools to transform school climate, and we learned that they achieved RESULTS. We are preparing a full report which will be distributed far and wide.

4. KICKING OFF THE SCHOOL YEAR WITH RESPECT - Are you doing something special this year to promote RESPECT? We recommend some of the themes and practices from our guide which might be expressed in the following way in terms of respect: respecting feelings, respecting each other, conflict resolution skills that foster respect, and respecting diversity. Activities we hope you consider: classroom meetings, daily dialog, and, of course, music that inspires respect. But we asked the question, and we would love to know your answer. Please e-mail Mark Weiss, mweiss@operationrespect.org and we'll report what you're doing in our next e-newsletter.

5. NEW YORK CITY WORKSHOPS - Beginning in mid-October, we'll be doing a series of two-day workshops for teams of staff from New York City elementary schools. The workshops prepare participants to use our Teacher Guide, Video and CD and to initiate work toward changing school climate. They take place in a school or district office in one of the five boroughs of NYC. We can accommodate two guests per workshop. If you're interested in attending one of these sessions, please e-mail Elizabeth Kolodny: ekolodny@operationrespect.org. She will be happy to send you a schedule and confirm your registration with the location of the workshop.
