An Administration Sworn to Secrecy,
A Nominee Dedicated to Evasion
Nominated to Chief Justice, John Roberts would leave President Bush’s indelible stamp on justice for decades, if confirmed. Yet despite the increased importance of the position to which Roberts has been nominated, the Bush administration maintains its steadfast refusal to provide key information about what kind of justice Roberts will bring to the Court.

House Passes Hate Crimes Legislation
The House of Representatives has just passed hate crimes legislation. Among other things, the legislation expands the definition of hate crimes to include those motivated by gender, gender identity, disability, and sexua| orientation. PFAW supports this legislation and supports a similar bill in the Senate which currently has 44 cosponsors. Read the letter PFAW sent to House members to encourage this outcome.

Roberts Dodges as Right Wing Cheers
After listening Monday to the opening statements of some Republicans on the Senate Judiciary – who urged him to “decline to answer” as many questions as possible – John Roberts appears to have taken their advice to heart. While his responses created the illusion of candor and the appearance of being open, he refused to answer specific questions more than twenty-five times, referring vaguely to issues which might be related to cases which may come before the court at some future time.
