Red Cross Money? by YourEnchantedGardener .....

Giving to Charity. IT makes a difference where you give, says Judith Warren of Operation USA.

I just got off the phone with Judith Warren
who works for Operation USA.

They are helping to get FUNCTIONAL
TONS of CLINICS in the KATRINA ZONE
where the UNDERINSURED who visit
local clinics can get the medical help they need.

She explained to me that Red Cross has been
pulled on the carpet a number of times.

According to Judith, Red Cross is basically
reimbursed by Federal funds including FEMA
for the good work they do that is basically providing
Shelters, (Check me on this, I am not sure
what exactly Red Cross help entails).

Judith was saying that basically the money
that Red Cross gets and how they spend it is not
clearly noted for public perusal.

Judith said it is not clear where the money they raise
goes. They have some very nice looking
buildings with marble floors.

If they are reimbursed by Gov funds
for the work they do, what do they do with the contributions
they raise????

This is not clear.

Operation USA, on the other hand, has open reports
and who they help and where.

You can go to the website and see a map
of their projects around the world.

One of their projects involved all these clinics.
They even have an open house day for Clinics in the SO CAL
area where it is a free shopping day--the Clinics come in
and get whatever they want that is surplus from fundraising
goods.

They have send generators to the New Orleans area
that the locals will keep.

The overhead for Operation USA that they use to do their
non profit service is around 4% overhead.

Red Cross, who knows...Judith says Red Cross says
they give 91 cents on the dollar to those they help.
Their overhead may be much larger...who knows????

I told Judith about the recent EG Project to open up the pathways
for locally grown organic and biodynamic foods to get into
the HIlton Hotel network. She told me that there are a lot
of Native America Tribes in the New Orleans area that are
really suffering. If I did anything with that
it would be getting them seeds and have areas in the Katrina
Zone that gave them back land to grow local food.

Lots to think about.

Operation USA looks like a good place to give charity
contributions to make a difference.

OPERATION USA RESPONDS TO HURRICANE KATRINA

Operation USA, a Los Angeles-based disaster relief group, announced today it was responding to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, one of the most devastating natural disasters in US history.

Having worked in South Carolina after Hurricane Hugo (1988) and in Florida after Hurricane Andrew (1992) as well as after numerous earthquakes, flood and other disasters here and throughout the world since 1979, Operation USA maintains supply warehouses in San Francisco and Los Angeles with supplies ready to be given to community organizations in the affected region.

Richard Walden, President of Operation USA, said: “Operation USA is assessing damage to community-based nonprofit health care clinics in both urban and rural areas of Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi and will provide them with replacement equipment, furnishings and medical supplies so they can care for the many tens of thousands of Americans in need. The American public is our partner in enabling Operation USA to fully respond to such a major disaster. I ask everyone who enabled our response to the recent Tsunami, Darfur (Sudan) and Niger disasters to allow us to provide a full measure of response here in the USA.”
