Went to the Farmers' Market
this Friday late afternoon.
Philly Phil from Philadelphia
saw me from 15 feet away
and yells out "Here comes Leslie!"
"Steve was asking about you!
where you been?"
"Been out of town more days than in
the last three weeks," I say.
Steve comes over.
"You O.K?'
"Yes, I say."
"Got any ripe Avo's?" I ask.
I see only hardballs.
"Will you have any ripe by the Sunday Market?"
"Just put them in a brown bag," says Philly.
"Check the truck," says Steve, "I always have
a few hidden away!"
"Give me my regular," I say,
meaning I'll take $5.00 worth.
Then more conversation follows,
about five minutes worth...
Jackie, Steve's wife, is doing great
with a home business shipping gift orders
of fruit everywhere. She takes the kids to school
and then does some work. Steve's ag consulting
bus is doing well.
I tell him my good news, too.
"Got any ugly oranges?" I ask.
"Take what you want from the green box,"
says Steve.
I don't eat oranges these days, but i take some
home to give away to housemates.
Long after the food is eaten,
I will remember the glow of the friendship.
