Back in 1978, I was known in high school
as big Paul Bunyan, the lumber jack.
I held the weightlifting record at the local gym.
I could out throw anyone
when it came to feeding pulp wood into the woodchipper.
Three years ago I couldn't even walk to the front door
of a customers house to be paid for a load of firewood.

This is how I met Matt.
I was delivering a load
across the street from his mothers house,
and the customer asked what my problem was
since I was fine the season before.
I went on to explain that I had MS
and one of the effects was on my walking.
He pointed out a house
and said the young man who lived there
was out rock climbing, running, doing many other things
and added he too had trouble walking at one time.

Well, I wanted his phone number!
After many calls to the number,
I learned Matt didn't live there,
but that he had MS
and was doing all the things my customer
said he could from Matt's mother.
I just had to meet him.
Contact was made and an appointment
was set up at a local gym.

My wife and I watched this man run across the parking lot.
We could not believe he had MS.
After a discussion about my illness
and what I wasn't able to do,
Matt asked for a year of my time
to try his way of eating and exercising,
18 months later I'm now playing one on one basketball
with my kids, riding my 4-wheeler
throughout the woods and fields of Salem County
and able to walk into my favorite deli
and sit on a stool without fear of falling off.
