Aloe Vera for Candida by RisingSun .....

A study completed by Stuart et al.15 examined whether acemannan, prepared from aloe vera, could stimulate the immune system of mice. The immune response was measured in terms of percent phagocytosis and killing of Candida. The researchers found that there was a 45% increase in phagocytosis in the cells treated with acemannan and Candida compared to a 25% increase in the controls. And, the rates of Candida killing were 38% in macrophages exposed to acemannan for 10 minutes compared to 0-5% in untreated cells. When macrophages were exposed to acemannan for 60 minutes, 98% of the yeast were killed compared to 0-5% in the controls. These results suggest that acemannan, from Aloe vera, may have anti-fungal and immunostimulant properties.

STIMULATION OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

To determine the antiviral activity present in some plant extracts, Sydiskis et al.16 tested extracts from Aloe barbadensis among other plants. The active components in these plants were identified as anthraquinones. Anthraquinones are compounds found in the sap of aloe and include aloe emodin and aloin. The researchers used a purified sample of aloe emodin prepared from aloin, and tested its effects on the infectivity of herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2, varicella-zoster virus, pseudorabies virus, influenza virus, adenovirus, and rhinovirus. The results showed that aloe emodin inactivated all of the viruses tested except adenovirus and rhinovirus. Microscopic examination of the anthraquinone-treated herpes simplex virus demonstrated that the envelopes were partially disrupted. The researchers concluded from these results that "anthraquinones extracted from a variety of plants are directly virucidal to enveloped viruses." In other words, the active components of Aloe vera have antiviral activity.

Another Study; Herbal Formulas

There are many formulas which contain substances often mentioned by natural health practitioners as helpful for Candida albicans [13-16] such as caprylic acid, citrus seed extract, n-acetylglucosamine, molybdenum, manganese, lacto bacillus bulgaricus, lactobacillus bifidus, pau d’arco, thyme, basil, goldenseal root, cloves, aloe vera, beet root, cinnamon, garlic, and oregano oil: normally subjects take tablets orally with meals. The lactobacilli help restore intestinal flora [18,19], caprylic acid appears to decrease IgG antibodies [53], garlic may increase natural killer cells [44], citrus seed extract appears to prevent the uptake of amino acids in the cytoplasmic membrane and cause leakage of low weight cellular contents [20], N-acetylglucosamine appears to be necessary for a portion of macrophage activation [45], molybdenum is a cofactor in detoxification [46] and acts as an anti-acetaldehyde nutrient [14], manganese can stimulate macrophage activity [47], pau d’ arco contains lapachol and xylodine which may be lethal to Candida albicans [48], and aloe vera has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans [49]. It is believed that the synergistic effects of the ingredients is effective in helping people recover from a variety of fungal infections. This investigator tends to recommend this type of combination most often when Candida albicans is suspected or present (such as when presented with vaginal yeast infections, though that is not a required sign). Most people follow label instructions
