Unexpected weight gain can be frustrating and upsetting, particularly if you haven't changed your diet or exercise regimen. Various factors can contribute to putting on a few extra pounds, some of which are more concerning than others. It's a good idea to find the root cause behind weight gain so you can address this issue before the number on the scale goes up even more. Here are six reasons your weight may have increased.

1. Hormonal Imbalance

Your hormones control many bodily processes, from metabolism to mood to growth. They even manage your ability to fall asleep and wake up at similar times each day. When your hormones change in even the slightest way, you may feel or notice significant effects within your body.

Gaining a lot of weight in a short amount of time is an indication that something is going on with your hormones. Often, the thyroid isn't producing enough hormones, leading to hypothyroidism. Another possible explanation is menopause weight gain. For women, a decrease in estrogen can trigger weight gain on the hips and thighs, whereas men experience a decline in testosterone levels, leading to more body fat and less muscle.

2. Lack of Sleep

Studies have shown that there's a connection between weight gain and not getting enough nightly rest. In addition to getting seven to nine hours of snooze time each night, sleep quality is essential to keep off those pounds. Uninterrupted sleep is key. If you're sleep-deprived, your body produces more ghrelin, a hormone that makes you hungry, which can cause you to overeat.

3. Stress

Life is demanding. Juggling several responsibilities at one time can lead you to feel stressed and anxious, which can cause your body to release extra cortisol. Your body is set up to control cortisol levels, but excessive amounts of stress can cause your body to produce an unusually high amount. If you don't get your anxiety under control, weight gain may be the least of your worries. You may also develop high blood pressure, diabetes, or osteoporosis.

4. Medications

Medications such as steroids and antidepressants are common weight gain culprits. Before stopping or changing your medicinal routine, you should first talk to your doctor, as abrupt changes in medications your body is used to having can cause serious health problems. Additionally, a new medicine may cause temporary body changes. Once your body adjusts to the new dose, it may go back to normal.

5. Heart Failure

If you're experiencing weight gain plus swelling in the legs or feet, you may be retaining water, which can be a sign of heart failure. Keep an eye on your weight to monitor its changes. It's normal for weight to fluctuate slightly in a day, but if you notice that you put on five pounds in a week, you should see your doctor so you can make sure you're not suffering from heart failure.

6. Kidney Issues

Swelling in the legs and feet is also a sign that you may have kidney problems. When these organs aren't functioning properly, your body can retain fluid because your kidneys can't remove waste like they would if they were healthy. Other signs you may be suffering from a kidney ailment are as follows: infrequent urination, foamy urine, appetite loss, fatigue, and muscle cramps. Make sure you see your doctor immediately if you have these symptoms, as a quick intervention may be able to reverse or lessen the damage.

If you've recently experienced rapid weight gain, don't ignore it, as the underlying issue causing the increase in weight could be serious. Plus, once you know what the problem is, you can fix it and get back to a comfortable weight again.
