When you are in the middle of the rat race of life, it may be hard to set aside time to prepare or even think about your future. The sooner you start planning, the easier and more stress-free the process will be. If you make the important decisions early, you can have the type of retirement that you've dreamt of. Whether you want to live adventurously and travel the world, or relax and spend quality time with your family, laying the groundwork early is key.

Like it or not, a big part of preparing for retirement has to do with money. This is why the first three goals focus on financial health. However, money isn't everything. In order to enjoy the future, you must stay mentally and physically healthy. Therefore, you will also read below about ways to set up your mind and body for long-term growth.

Short-Term Financial Objectives

There are simple habits that you can start now to move towards financial stability in the future. Create a budget to calculate how much of your income goes to bills and expenses, and how much is left over at the end of the month. Keep an eye on the amount left over to limit overspending. Extra money can be used to pay off credit cards. Credit card debt can add up quickly, so paying off those high-interest cards should be priority number one. Priority number two is placing money in an emergency fund. Emergency funds can then be used instead of credit cards when unexpected costs inevitably come up.

Mid-Term Financial Objectives

Once all the short-term fires are out, it is time to look a little further down the road. Life insurance is important if you have a family that depends on you. It is extremely customizable and is often less expensive than people think. You can easily get life insurance quotes online, or speak to a trusted agent. Focus on paying off auto and student loans. Pay down loans with the highest interest rates first. The goal here is to lower your debt ratio.

Long-Term Financial Objectives

In order to plan for retirement, you need to determine how much money you'll require. There are free online calculators to help you estimate that amount. Once you have your goal, speak to a professional about investment options. Outside of retirement investments, you should also increase the balance in your savings accounts as much as possible. Money in savings accounts will be easier to withdraw if it's needed in a pinch.

Physical Health Goals

Traveling the world or playing with your grandkids will be difficult unless you keep your body strong and agile. One easy habit to indulge in is simply getting enough sleep. A well-rested person has better memory recall, increased concentration and a stronger immune system. Naps may be tempting as you get older but should be limited to 30 minutes. Any more than that and your nighttime rest could be affected.

Nutrition plays an extremely important role in physical health. Food gives us many of the vitamins and minerals the body needs to build healthy cells. It's especially helpful to increase fiber and potassium intake as you get older. Both aid in digestion, weight management and healthy heart function.

Mental Health Goals

Sometimes getting older can lead to loneliness, boredom and depression. It's easy to feel forgotten when loved ones are busy with their own lives. So, continue doing the things that you love to do. Enjoy the freedom to take a craft class or learn a new game. With fewer responsibilities, you can sightsee and travel to places that you've always wanted to go. Staying active will improve your mental health and also keep your body moving.

Reach out to the community and friends through social networks. Maybe you can volunteer for the church or an animal shelter. By helping others you will preserve your sense of value and cultivate a positive outlook on life.
