Fibro - how do we talk to doctors? by Karlin .....

I stumble and get defensive with talking with a new doctor.

I might soon be changing Doctors, and after 12 years with the same one I have not thought about how to introduce myself to a Doctor, until now. It is important not to ruminate on it, so I will get it out here...

"Hello Doctor Howdoyousaythat?" "Yes I have had Fibromyalgia for a long time, diagnosed in 1994 but I had it for at least 10 years before that"

"At least? - longer?" he asks.

"Well the signs were there since childhood, but I was run down by a drunk driver in 1976 and the pains started coming on about 5 years later, kind of a text-book case I guess"

"Textbook case?" he inquires of me once again. I saw it right away - he is not familiar with Fibromyalgia, having learned of it in medical school 25 year ago when they were less consiliatory towards chronic pain conditions.  "Textbook Fibro comes on 5 years after a motor vehicle accident" I reply.

"I have been atheletic in my life, before and as this condition came on" I blurted out, defensive before being attacked. "The difference between normal pains and this 'useless pain' is that climbing mountains is painful but we know we are getting STRONGER.... and with injuries we begon to HEAL right away. With Fibro, the pains are hard to bear because it has no upside. And things keep getting worse - the fatigue is a huge problem, the muscle aches become prone to cramping and I had had muscle cramps that lasted an hour and I was sweating and screaming and even whimpering at times. And that is the 2nd worst pain I get - Trigeninal Neuralgia is off the scale.. I cant talk about this anymore doctor, please just fill my prescription"

The way to talk to the doctor is to not let him say anything until your blurb is done. Be rude, they are. Just talk over them. I wish I could be like that. I will let you know how it goes in about a month.

Stay tuned.

PS - now we can pay for spell check!! Yay!!
