"Into the Unknown": On the box side, the original photograph is credited: "Anthony Hernandez: Pictures for Rome #17, 1999, inkjet print, 40 inches square." The photo was shown in "Art in America" magazine, June/July 2019 issue.***

The magazine image was 6" x 6"; I cut it down to a rectangular shape, backed it with Rhimax, then cut it into four sections. Each section is mounted onto cardboard, so that you are looking down into the image; this can be seen from the detail photo. The newspaper image of the little man is simultaneously walking both UP the steps and INTO the image. The little ladder is made out of toothpicks.

"Hives": Background image from the Los Angeles Times newspaper++ enhanced with acrylic glaze and black ink pen; top: piece of beeswax; bottom: paper wasp nest; recycled plastic containers.

I started this 16-box series with a natural found object inside of a plastic container##, and wanted to end the series with the same. The hexagon-shaped beeswax and paper wasp nest are superimposed over a human "hive" formation: the image is of stacked shipping containers.

"Eco Art by mayah" utilizes recycled and earth-friendlier materials whenever possible.
