Materials: recycled cardboard base; waxed paper,tissue paper; reused paint palette scraps; handmade mini-books from scrap paper,paint pen, and embroidery floss.
This assemblage piece started out with a small cube I'd made out of waxed paper and tissue papers years ago; I discovered the cube had gotten somewhat squished at the back of my desk, and was inspired to rip it open. Then it came to me that the opened cube resembled a toy box. Immediately I reflected that when I was a kid, I was full of ideas about what I wanted to be and do as an adult. I was an avid reader of primarily fantasy and science-fiction books that further fueled my aspirations. Holding this "toy box" in my hand, I realized that my life has taken a completely unforeseen path and that the dreams of my childhood have been largely unfulfilled.
In this small assemblage piece, out of the damaged childhood toy box spill unfulfilled and discarded dreams in the form of crumpled up grayish-red blobs and tossed out books.

Materials: recycled cardboard base; reused plastic medicine bottle; reused mini plastic bag and embroidery thread; handmade mini-books from scrap paper, paint pen, and embroidery floss.
Again, the theme of tossing out childhood fantasies and dreams shows in the piece. Although my mother was an ardent old-school feminist who insisted that her daughter go to college and have a career in order to support herself and not rely on a husband to take care of her, childhood fantasies of finding the right "prince" still persisted.
Life happened and now as an adult, I find that being single is much preferable to being in a marriage or relationship full of angst and conflict. So...out go the fantasies of finding "Prince Charming" in the form of fairy tale books thrown into the trash.
