Let's start with the plumbing you need to put in to prepare for your new bathroom sink. Everything needs to be perfectly measured in place at the right height. People make the mistake of thinking that since they will be working with flexible piping, it won't matter where they install the plumbing. They are confident that they will get all the pipes to reach the sink no matter where they place the hot water and the cold water points. The problem with that kind of thinking is that while you can be sure to get everything to work properly, you won't be able to make it look good. You need to be sure that you measure the height at which the sink will be when you install it, and you need to put the hot water and cold water points and the drain outlet at exactly the right places so that nothing is visible from where people are coming in to use the bathroom will stand. Make sure that you measure everything by hand, not depending on the manufacturer's published measurements.

Nothing can be more upsetting than buying a beautiful new pedestal-type bathroom sink, dreaming of all the ways you will install it, and to then be careless enough with the way you handle it and chip a corner. Make sure that you don't tighten the bolts holding it to the wall too much. It's easy to keep tightening a bolt - it's made of steel. The sink that is attached to is made of earth on the other hand. It's easy to compress your bolts so hard that they eat into the china.

If making the right measurements for the plumbing is important only for the way everything looks and not for how it works, it isn't that way with the pedestal. If you mismeasure things installing the pedestal, it's just not going to reach the sink properly or be at the correct angle. The pedestal is bolted to the wall. You need to make sure that everything is correct down to the last millimeter. Before you attach the pedestal to the sink, make sure that the water comes into the sink and leaves it properly. You won't have access to any of the plumbing once the pedestal is bolted in place. If you only have drywall behind your bathroom sink, you probably want to use blocking behind the wall to make sure that the weight of the sink is properly supported.

And finally, don't be embarrassed about asking for help. A bathroom sink can be much heavier than you think. You will appreciate having another pair of hands to help you hold and position everything while you measure and mark. Things can be remarkably quick if you have a friend helping you out.
