Eco Art: Cardboard Flower Goddess by Mayah .....

Cardboard can be a beautiful, free, and sturdy alternative to expensive canvas or frames in making Eco Art.

I've utilized recycled cardboard quite frequently in my Eco Art pieces, but usually as backing material.

My friend and fellow artist LFIRE has been making wonderful art utilizing cardboard (See her recent cardboard art on her latest blog: https://www.curezone.org/blogs/fm.asp?i=2420946 ) Inspired by her work, I've been looking at cardboard with new eyes, and seeing the artistic beauty in it. This piece is one result:

The portrait of "Venus" is from a magazine catalog advertisement; her hair is enhanced with colored ink pens. I've used this image of "Venus" several times in other art pieces; the advertisers developed this image from a 1480's painting by Botticelli called "Birth of Venus": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Birth_of_Venus

The flower images are from "The Whole Seed Catalog/From Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds/2018"* that Your Enchanted Gardener gifted me. The magazine images are glued onto Rhimax*** paper for stability and thickness and then onto a piece of background burlap paper.

The art piece is glued onto the "frame" that is an old cardboard box. The outer box originally was white and not in very good condition; the inside of the box was a wonderful rich light brown hue. I took the box apart carefully, turned it inside out, and reconstructed it so that the inner became the outer. Several coatings of clear matte Acriglaze** were applied to the cardboard to protect it and give it a soft sheen. I really like the texture of the cardboard and the vertical lines in it.

Jute was added for the hanger; you can see the depth of the box by the shadow cast. Piece is 7" X 7.5" X 2.5" depth.
