Our bodies are truly remarkable. They allow us to engage in the world around us in so many ways. They automatically maintain our heartbeats and breath. Our legs jump for joy, our hands clap to a rhythm, and our arms brace to catch us when we fall. These amazing vessels make it possible for us to do everything we set out for.
Since our bodies are of utmost importance, it's vital that we protect them with proper care. But being exposed to so many different opinions and ideas on how to take care of our health can be confusing. It’s worthwhile to take a simple approach to wellness, applying methods backed by science to our daily routines.
Our bodies are designed to be active. We have limbs that reach, backs that bend, muscles that stretch. Being too sedentary is a recipe for disaster, as it puts our health at serious risk. So we need to move daily, in a variety of ways, and get an adequate amount of intense cardio exercise per week.
What makes exercising most fun is: there isn’t just one way to do it. Try mixing types of workouts between sessions at the gym, at-home exercise, and playing in the great outdoors. We are most likely to stick to forms of exercise we genuinely enjoy, so we should explore which forms of movement make us happiest.
Workouts can be done independently, with a friend, or as part of a larger class. Social support can motivate us to adhere to exercise routines. Personal trainers can help teach proper form and offer guidance tailored to individual needs.
Embrace a diet with plenty of variety. Doing so intrigues the palate and makes it more likely that we are hitting all of our nutritional needs. Of course, we should use our best judgment to avoid foods that cause us an allergic (or otherwise negative) physical reaction.
Cooking from scratch as often as possible is a smart move. This will limit the amount of preservatives and highly processed foods we consume. When we make our own food, we are able to see and control exactly what we put into our bodies. It also intimately engages us in the food-to-table process.
We also need to drink enough water, and consume more of it than any other beverage. Water helps flush toxins from our bodies, promotes healthy bowel movements, and protects our immune system. It even gives a natural, caffeine-free boost to our mental focus.
Our skin plays such an important role in housing our many parts and pieces. It serves as a sort of protective shield from outside threats. It also adapts incredibly well to various temperatures and climates.
Like parched hair or brittle nails, dry skin should always be nourished with lotion. Our skin actually creates its own protective natural oils, which is why it benefits from only being vigorously washed on occasion. Consuming foods rich in essential fatty acids helps our skin stay supple and healthy from the inside out.
Our bodies need vitamin D to function, which we naturally absorb from the sun’s beautiful light. We should spend a decent amount of time in the sun, and do so safely. Sunscreen is necessary every day to protect us from ultraviolet rays, which otherwise cause skin damage and can lead to skin cancer.
We must always remember to honor our bodies by treating them with kindness. We should embrace the changes our skin and bodies undergo with age and experience. Loving ourselves through every stage is important.
