Eco Art: Spiral by Mayah .....

I've been working on a larger art piece but it's been going slowly. Took a break from working on it and made this smaller piece below:

This was fun to do. It's a greeting card mounted onto an old parquet floor tile found in the garage.

The greeting card has gone through three metamorphosis: Originally, the card was made from a piece of napkin stained with excess paint from another art project. On top was a magazine photo of a spiral staircase, with machine embroidery added. I sent the card to a friend who altered it by removing the magazine photo and replacing that with a white cut-out spiral; she sent the card back to me. Then I removed the white cut-out and replaced it with hand-embroidery.

It's hard to see it from the photo (look at the left hand side of the photo and the outline of the plastic sheeting can be seen) but a clear piece of plastic sheeting cut out of packaging material lies across the top of the card to protect it, held down by the four thumb tacks. A small sea shell from the beaches of Southern California is glued to the top of the plastic sheeting.

The tacks were deceptively difficult to get into the wood parquet. I broke about 4-5 of them trying to hammer them into the wood before figuring out to use a very thin nail to hammer into the wood to make the holes; even then, I bent 3 nails until the holes were deep enough for the tacks to go into the wood easily. Tough parquet!
