DMSO is a colorless liquid derived as a by-product from wood pulp in the production of paper. During a paper production process, wood chips are mixed with a mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide to break the bonds between cellulose and lignin, the natural material that bonds tree cells together.

Crown Zellerbach, a timber processing company, attempted to get rid of this so called 'waste' by spraying it on dirt roads to compact the earth. However, various animals would come and lick it up, and deer would even lick six inch potholes in the road in their determination to obtain this substance. Dr. Stanley Jacob of the Oregon Health Sciences University observed this and later identified this “lip-smacking” substance as DMSO, a healing penetrant that instantly soaks in through the skin and reduces pain.

How to take DMSO

* Before taking DMSO orally, pulmonarily or topically, make sure the DMSO solution is free of any contaminants. You may add one or two drops of iodine into the DMSO solution to make sure it is completely disinfected.

* DMSO can be ingested orally. To drink DMSO, make sure the DMSO is medical grade.

* DMSO can be vaporized using an ultrasonic mister and inhaled. By inhaling DMSO, the DMSO mists can dissolve the tar residual accumulated in the lung.

* DMSO can be applied topically. To do this, make sure the DMSO solution is undiluted. Just paint onto the skin. Do not rub the skin.

二甲基亚砜（DMSO）是一种含硫有机化合物，常温下为无色无臭的透明液体，具有吸湿性的可燃液体，既有高极性，高沸点，非质子，于水混溶的特性，毒性极低，热稳定性好，能溶于乙醇，丙醇，苯和氯仿等大多、数有机物，被誉为“万能溶剂”。

除此之外，在医药工业中二甲基亚砜还有直接用作某些药物的原料及载体。二甲基亚砜本身有消炎止痛，利尿，镇静等作用，亦誉为“万灵药”。

DMSO 可以口服，注射，雾化后用肺吸收，或涂在皮膚上。

各种药物溶解在DMSO中，不用口服和注射，涂在皮肤上就能渗入体内，开辟了给药新途径。更重要的是提高了病区局部药物含量，降低身体其他 的药物危害。

在医疗上的研究报道很多，中国由沈阳药学院、北京药物研究所、中国药物检测中心等在60年代进行了全面的毒理检验及病理解剖证明：我国的DMSO的半数量LG50值为（22.4±1.4）g/kg，与公开的文献报道的21.4g/kg基本一致，属于无毒，与病理解剖所见相符。北京药物研究所用溶肉瘤素、 B518、C6323、N甲等药物研究所用溶肉瘤素、瘤局部，取得很好疗效，明显抑制肿瘤生长。在动物实验时，经过解剖检测，局部药物浓度比其他药物浓度高2～8倍。不少研究认为癌细胞有一层角质保护膜，妨碍药物进入，DMSO具有对角质的溶解渗透能力，所以能提高疗效。60年代北京协和医院等 160个医疗单位进行临床试用，并在本溪开设专题门诊，积累了大量数据，实践证明对神经性皮炎、牛皮癣、关节炎、滑囊炎、毛囊炎、类风湿、中耳炎、鼻炎、附件炎、牙疼、带状泡疹、痔疮、扭伤、腰肌劳损、烧伤、外伤等等都具有疗效。目前生产的骨友灵、脚气药、肤氢松软膏等外用药及各大医院的外用制剂中已广泛使用。中国科学院兽医研究所用DMSO溶解“帕斯”治疗马传贫和寄生虫病。特别是在中药萃取制剂中，提高了有用组分含量，提高了药效。
