Hey reddit, we are Zoe Lister-Jones (Life in Pieces) and Daryl Wein (Lola Versus). We just made a new film called Consumed, a thriller set in the world of GMOs. AMA (self.movies)

Hey r/movies, Zoe Lister-Jones and Daryl Wein here! Excited to answer your questions about our latest film, CONSUMED (starring Danny Glover, Kunal Nayyar, Victor Garber, Beth Grant, Taylor Kinney, and Anthony Edwards) which we co-wrote and co-produced. Consumed is a narrative dramatic thriller set in the complex world of GMOs. The story is anchored by a working-class, single Mother on a hunt to uncover the cause of her son's mysterious illness. Interwoven are the stories of an Organic farmer, the CEO of a biotechnology corporation, and two Scientists on the verge of a major discovery.
You can learn more about CONSUMED at our website: http://www.consumedthemovie.com/
Or you can ask us about the other films we made together, BREAKING UPWARDS and LOLA VERSUS. Or you could even ask Zoe about her new show on CBS, LIFE IN PIECES, or her work in films and shows like THE OTHER GUYS, DELOCATED and NEW GIRL. Or anything else youre interested in hearing about. Looking forward to chatting with you guys!
We'll be back at 5pm PST to answer all your questions! Hi, Daryl and Zoe here! Sorry we're a few minutes late!
Wow! A lot of great questions here! Let's get started!
Thanks so much for all your questions! Bye!

The China Syndrome stigmatized nuclear power, setting it back decades and consigning us to a greater dependency on fossil fuels for power generation.
Are you at all concerned that by promoting a movie that isn't scientifically sound you could set back agricultural science in a similar manner?
Consumers are already misinformed about the safety of GMOs, something that's a consensus among scientists. Isn't it irresponsible to play into those unfounded fears?

Anti-GMO rhetoric has already resulted in thousands of preventable deaths or debilitations.
Anti-GMOers are seen in the scientific community as the same pseudoscientific, conspiracy theorist, chemophobic slacktivists as anti-vaxxers or 9/11 truthers. The fact of the matter is, virtually every scientific agency worldwide agrees that GE cultivars pose no additional risks to humans or the environment. Adoption of GE cultivars increases yield, reduces pesticide use and increases biodiversity.
Mandatory labelling of GMOs contravenes legal precedent (ideological labels are optional, eg. kosher/halal/organic; and other developmental techniques are not labelled); it also stigmatizes healthy food (hurting the impoverished); moreover, it would cost untold millions because it would necessitate a complete overhaul of the food distribution network and is beyond the proper reach of the govt. Meanwhile, people have every right to avoid GMOs by purchasing food labelled GMO-free - so no rights are being violated.
So my question is this: Did anyone involved in the movie raise concerns about the stigmatization of perfectly healthy food?
EDIT: Wow, thanks for the double gold! Looking forward to hearing from Zoe and Daryl!

Hey, Daryl;
You're quoted around the web as saying the following:
"We believe in science wholeheartedly. But the truth of the matter is, most of the genetically modified foods that are being made corns, soy are actually going more toward biofuels and feeding cattle, and so there is a bit of a misconception of how they are benefiting people."
My question for you is: What do you know as factual information regarding GMOs, and separately, what do you believe - there's a difference - regarding GMOs - and what role did all of that information and thinking play in developing your movie?

So... "dramatic thriller"... "GMOs"... what makes this a thriller, as opposed to an updated retelling of Bitter Harvest?

Hi Daryl and Zoe, I have some questions for both of you:
Why do you pick the GMO as the topic for the movie? I found it pretty interesting.
What are some of the pros and cons working with your significant others? I think both of you can answer this since both of you made three movies together
Zoe, I like your characters in Life in Pieces, So my questions is there any hilarous behind the scene story when you are working in Life in Pieces?
Last questions for both of you are what is your favorite dessert?
Thank you

Is Danny Glover, in fact, too old for this shit?
In all seriousness, Zoe, you were in a great scene in one of my favorite movies. Was it hard to keep a straight face during the Yankee Clipper Gun Therapy scene in The Other Guys? What's Bobby Cannavale smell like?

Danny Glover, on set, actually said "I'm too old for this shit." The crew went nuts. He's awesome.
And sadly I don't remember Bobby Cannavale's scent, I feel like it would be spicy though.

Hello Zoe and Daryl, thank you for joining us today! I have a few questions today if you don't mind!
What particular themes or genres would you like to explore with future projects?
What is Victor Garber like to work with and out of related curiosity, do you guys watch the Flash where he portrays Dr. Martin Stein fantastically?
What advice would you give to those who are currently pursuing a film career that are still in school (high school or college) such as particular classes that help or actions that will contribute positively towards the future?

Hi Zoe and Daryl, its interesting how you are both writers as well as actors. What of two came first and do you find them beneficial to each other?
permalink
[]ConsumedTheFilmAMA[S] -3 points 1 day ago
Hi! We both studied acting at NYU, but Daryl was making short films in high school, and I wrote non-fiction, so I think they were both big passions, and they definitely feed each other creatively. As an actor, a lot is out of your control, so being able to create your own work is super empowering.

Hey Zoe! I first saw you on Whitney, which I thought was fantastic in its short run.
It was widely hated during its time on air, both seemingly by audiences and critics. Did this affect the atmosphere on set? Did any of you take the reviews to heart? Were you close with any of the cast and are you still?
I could probably Google this, but have you ever done stand up? You're incredibly funny, and yours and Colin's segment is almost always my favorite on Life In Pieces.

Thanks! Colin and I are having a blast on Life In Pieces! Glad you're digging it!
I'm still close with all my Whitney co-stars, including Whitney herself! I personally don't read reviews if I can help it, just try and focus on the work!
