As mentioned previously I've been HIV+ for between 10 and 15 years. Things started to go wrong about 5 years ago. I play a sport that requires mind body coordination. I started to play badly but just in very small increments.
In the last year before detection I was plagued with various fungal infections that would appear then disappear then return.
Ear infections, athlete's foot, dhobi rash
( crutch ), occasional thrush to genitals, nail fungus.
One February I started getting breathless when walking up slight inclines. This increased and by June I booked a doctor's appointment on a Friday. Tests were done with a week wait for the results.
By the following Monday I was feeling worse so I returned to doctors. End result I went to A&E with a doctor's letter.
Four days later after tests I am informed that I'm HIV+. I have PCP (pneumonia) and CMV (eye virus). All done in a highly sympathetic way.
These are classic symptoms. The eye virus was a bit novel. They hadn't seen it at the hospital for 14 years. Can we take photographs they asked.....
My readings were CD4 39 and viral load 400,000.
I was immediately put on IV antibiotics and steroids.
I am a male, married, my wife is female. We do not practice safe sex. My wife is HIV negative.
