June 18, 2020 - Thank You Hippocrates! -

If Hippocrates - known as "the Father of Western Medicine" - were alive today would he consider what is done in the name of "Medicine" as medicine? ......... There is certain criteria that can be applied to determine the answer. One of these is the principal of wholeness. Wholeness is possibly the leading principal for healing which was Hippocrates objective. Is healing the objective of modern medicine? .........

"The art of medicine was formed in Greece in close relationship to culture and philosophy. During the Christian era, it was projected through the Corpus Hippocraticus, in several ethical and philosophical documents such as The Oath of Medical Science, Medical Law, Decency, Precepts, ... The central idea of Hippocratic philosophy is the principle of wholeness, summarized by Plato in the sentence 'The certain knowledge of nature is solely possible from medicine and only when it is correctly approached as a whole'. Clinical actions, are imbued by Hippocratic ethics; their aim is the ill that is an anthropos, a human being. The physician must take care of the ill with devotion, selflessness, comprehension and compassion. The oath is the supreme deontological code that summarizes the essential concepts of Hippocratic philosophy. Recent studies suggest that there is a great distance between the thinking of Hippocrates and present scientific medicine. Hippocratic philosophy rejects the epistemological principles of modern science. The Hippocratic logic is probabilistic and temporal and rejects the principles of noncontradiction, of identity and therefore the abstract determinism of contemporary science. The present force of the oath is explained because its ethics and epistemology are matters of medicine that understands the real world of the ill, trying to avoid suffering and injustice. Only Hippocrates can defend each ill as a whole with the wisdom of its philosophy."[4]

My heart goes out to the individuals who suffer mentally, emotionally in their relationship with food. I wish it wasn't so and I accept that this kind of suffering appears to be a fairly common occurrence, apparently more common among woman and starting fairly early in their lives.

I appreciate the perspective others have gained from their "journeys" through the "underworld" depths of their relationship to food and I can regard each of them as a kind of "hero's journey".[1] I realize this is a complex issue that includes a number of aspects including one's relationship to food, emotions, body image and possibly other factors. However, I can't help but to think that the actual food itself is also a factor. Consider, if you will, the findings of Weston A. Price in his "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration". I am convinced from the findings of Dr. Price as well as others that poor nutrition plays a role in the overall "psychology of eating".

My work as a nutrition therapy chef is to serve food-as-medicine that is prepared most deliciously. The real key for food to have life-forces that support healing is in the nutrient density of each and every food item. There is plenty of documentation showing that modern "foods of commerce" typically can not deliver the nutrition that we need. Unfortunately there are too many people who suffer the consequence of poor nutrition even though they may be eating what may appear to be "food" when it is actually highly processed and manufactured food products with less than and possibly completely void of complete nourishment. No wonder people grow up eating these products and not getting nourished! Is it also "no wonder" that undernourished people suffer a variety of effects including various brain/mind/emotional symptoms.

I've been blogging about these and related issues.[2]

March 6, 2018 - Bionutrient Meter

"How would you like a gadget that you can use to tell you the nutritional quality of what your growing and want to eat. It's called a "Bionutrient Meter" and it's quickly becoming reality. My guest this time on 'Digging in the Dirt' is Dan Kittredge founder and Executive Director of the Bionutrient Food Association the driving force behind developing this device.
The mission of the BFA is to increase quality in the food supply."[3]

Just listened to this 26' program and recommend it for everyone who has any interest in the nutritional quality of their foods.
