What does "Organically Grown" Really Mean?

Following the National Heirloom Expo 2014, Nadine and I visited our friends Katrina Frey and the Frey family at their 2000 or more land in Redwood Valley, home of Frey Biodynamic and Organic Wines. The first morning, on the kitchen table, I was greeted by the sight and fragrance of this peach that had grown nearby. I was inspired by the fruit. It was truly dream food. It touch me on the level of multiple senses. That my friend is the meaning of organically grown as I know it. Until a scientist experiences this, he will never known the meaning of the word "organically grown."

Walking through the Hillcrest Farmers Market today, one of our largest in San Diego County, I overheard some eaters on a fervent search for the food that was "Organic." It triggered some memories, and definitions I want to print here on the Curezone Plant Your Dream Blog.

The search for Organically Grown is a deep human impulse.

I once had a shirt that I got from Gypsy Boots, one of the organic elders.
The shirt said, "Organically Grown," inferring that the wearer was just that organically grown.

Organically grown for those in my generation now in their 60's, and used before the GMO and National Organic Program (USDA) era, was more than something certified. Organically Grown was a way of life, a sense of seeking out and standing in communion with Nature and her Original Technology of Sun, Air, Earth, Water.

I was trained in my sense of good health by Dr. Bernard Jensen, and elder in the natural healing arts. He lived from 1908-2001.

He often spoke eloguently about the standard of Whole, Pure, and Natural. By this in meant Organically Grown. He said this in a spirit of reverence for the Earth. To him, Organically grown mean seeking to live in harmony with Mother Earth. This was more than science to him. It was spirituality.

Organically Grown to Harpo, another Elder I knew, was a standard of living. It was also a quest. We would travel 100 miles up to a place called Beaumont, above Hemet, when it was rumored that there was a yellow organically growing cherry tree. We would stop on the way in Hemet for treasured Apricots from trees that were loved up with deep rich soil, fed, and nourished with minerals that has been transformed from dust into living substance a plant could absorb readily.

Gradually, over the decades, as more and more people have lost touch with the earth, we look to science rather than inspired natural health teachers as Jensen for our definitions of Organic.

What the USDA, The United States Department of Ag, calls organic as defined by their National Organic Program may not be the same standard that someone like Dr. Jensen, or I have in mind when I hear the words.

I am a member of the Organic Trade Association. Today, the term, I am sure learns toward something that can be defined and used as a standard with specific rules, some that keep changing as the opportunity to find real whole, pure, and natural food becomes less and less available.

I, for one, when I hear the words Organically grown, think of something deeper, something connected, something I aspire to be as well as become.
