Nourishing Traditions Diet & Cancer by chef jem .....

The end of "the 30-year plus war on cancer" is in sight now!

November 7, 2014 - This blog-writer wholly endorses the following diet that Dr. Cowan has recommended to his patients with cancer. It is a low-carbohydrate, high fat, medium protein diet.
(Also read "The Fourfold Path to Healing" by Thomas S. Cowan, MD, Sally Fallon and Jaimen McMillan.)

Included:

"Meats – beef, fish, fowl, shellfish, liver, sweetbreads, heart, kidney, brain and other organ meats. Bacon and ham are ok, IF they have no nitrates, sulphites or sweeteners.

Bone broths (made according to Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon). Ideally, these should be served with each meal.

Eggs (eat freely, especially yolks). OK to have raw yolks (but not raw whites).

Bone broths and meat stocks.

Stevia (whole (green) is best).

Almonds and seeds like flax, sunflower, pumpkin, chia, poppy (raw and soaked or sprouted – except flax & chia don’t soak well).

Sour fruits (lemons, limes, berries, sour apples, pineapple, white grapefruit).
Fruits we don’t think are fruits such as tomatoes and avocados.

Cultured fruits – lacto-fermented chutney (even the off-limits fruit can be eaten this way).

Cultured milks (24-hour yogurt, yogurt cheese, kefir).

Lots of vegetables raw and cooked. Summer squash & spaghetti squash are OK.

Cultured vegetables – sauerkraut, homemade pickles (radish, turnips, cucumber) made with salt instead of vinegar. Try to have these every meal

High quality fats – animal fats (butter, ghee, lard, tallow, duck, bone marrow, cod liver oil, butter oil) and vegetable (coconut oil, cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil, flax).

Homemade condiments: mayonnaise, salad dressing, hollandaise sauce, salsa, pesto, guacamole, ketchup. Mustard can be homemade, or if purchased, should have no sweeteners or additives.

Freshly juiced vegetables daily – carrots, beet and greens (1/3 of each). Although Carrots and Beets are in the NO list, they can be used in this fresh juice.

Beverages – herbal teas, spring water, lemonade, ginger drinks (sweetened only with stevia).

Cultured drinks (beet kvass, ginger, lemonade, etc) – Nourishing Traditions has lots of recipes.

Foods to avoid -

All sweeteners except stevia (that means no sugars, honey, maple syrup or artificial sweeteners).

All grains (wheat, rice, corn, barley, amaranth, quinoa, and many more).

Sweet fruits (most apples, peaches, mangos, apricots, and many more).

Most milk and cheese (if it’s not cultured, it is not on the diet).

Legumes & nuts (except raw, soaked almonds).

High carbohydrate vegetables (winter squash, sweet potatoes, yams, carrots, beets, parsnips etc).

Canned items except coconut milk.

The diet follows the basic protocol for the GAPS (Gut & Psychology Syndrome) diet by Dr. Natasha Campbell-Mcbride with some changes ..."[6]

Re: "Lots of vegetables raw and cooked" - just be sure to include plenty of high-quality fat-rich sauces, dressings, dips and the like with all your vegetables.!

March 15l 2018 - Intelligent Cancer Treatment -

A friend who had worked years ago at the Kushi Institute advocating the macrobiotic diet mentioned the questionable success rate there for that dietary regime's approach to cancer and also indicated that medical treatment was also necessary. One case in particular was mentioned where the individual died and in my friend's opinion that was due to their refusal to include the medical treatment ("chemo therapy"). I refrained from commenting at that time but later had thought further on this. The following is a fairly good representation of the kind of thinking. in my mind.

"If using highly dangerous cancer-causing radiation to diagnose and treat cancer is the best modern medicine can come up with then we should feel sorry for humans as well as the practice of modern medicine. Oncologists are good at cutting, burning and poisoning cancer with surgery, radiation, and drugs, but they fail to treat the cause of cancer.

They try to help but usually do more harm than good. Oncologists focus on naming cancer based on geography and body location. They pay little to no attention to the cause of the cancer. Obviously, there are mechanisms and pathways that lead to cancer, but traditional doctors are simply not interested in helping patients and their families avoid cancer or its reoccurrence. They prove this by treating and diagnosing cancer in the most dangerous ways possible, never telling their patients all the good things they can do for themselves.

Instead of asking what cancer and what chemo agent should be used the intelligent thing to do is diagnose WHY the cancer has occurred. What are the underlying causes that lead to cancer and other illnesses? Modern medicine approaches illness like a mechanic trying to diagnose what’s wrong with your car by listening to the noises it makes and never looking inside to see what’s going on. However, it is easy to look under the hood.

Even without a battery of expensive medical tests we can profile the basic physiological parameters of each patient (one can do this at home no doctor needed) thus giving us methods for identifying the conditions in which a person’s cancer thrives. ..."[1]

The Current (Standard American) Dietary (SAD) Contrast to "Nourishing Traditions" -

"According to the BMJ,[3] almost 60 percent of the calories the average American consumes come from ultra-processed foods.

Not just processed. Ultra-processed!

These are "food products" created by Big Food to be "accessible, convenient, and highly palatable, ready-to-drink, ready-to-eat, or ready-to-heat," with the specific purpose of replacing dishes prepared from scratch.

They include:

Confectionery, soft drinks, sweetened juices and dairy drinks, powders for juices, sausages, chicken and fish nuggets or sticks and other pre-prepared frozen dishes, dried products such as cake mix, powdered soup, instant noodles, ready-seasonings, and an infinity of new products including packaged snacks, morning cereals, cereal bars, and "energy" drinks.

These ultra-processed foods contribute over 90 percent of all added sugars to the diet.

But here's the kicker.

In a separate article in the same issue of BMJ,[4] researchers found that a 10 percent increase in the consumption of ultra-processed food leads to a 12 percent increase in the risk of cancer.

Of course this didn't come as a surprise to me, and I'm sure it's not a newsflash for you either.

But what's crazy is that these foods now make up most of the calories that the average American consumes on a daily basis.

Is it any wonder that cancer is now the second leading cause of death, behind only heart disease?

As long as our "sickcare" system continues to focus on suppressing symptoms with drugs and surgery rather than addressing the underlying cause, we won't be able to stem the rising tide of chronic disease.

That's exactly the argument I made in my recent book, Unconventional Medicine.[5]

Yes, the debate over who has health insurance is important. But we have to remember that health insurance does not equal healthcare, and there is no amount of health insurance that will save us if we don't switch our focus to preventing and reversing disease, rather than just managing it.

In health,
Chris

P.S. For more on exactly what we should do to reinvent healthcare and end the chronic disease epidemic, check out my recent book, Unconventional Medicine.
