The power of the breath is by and large mostly untapped by people. Breath has so much to offer us, starting with tranquilizing the mind.

One thing I am deeply convinced of is the need to care for our psyche. That is why I have also recently created this Blog: Psyche & Health.

I don't think we have to become "psychologists" in order to care for our psyches. I do think we have to be radically honest with ourselves, tell ourselves the truth about what is going on inside us at any given moment. That "truth of self" alone can make a difference.

Maybe the truth is that we are in pain and secretly suffering because we don't feel the freedom to tell the truth about the way it really is with us. "Truth" is not "beauty". We, our life and/or our relations with others does not have to look "pretty" before we tell the truth of self, life and other. However, maybe we need to "catch our breath" before we feel we can begin our radical truth telling.

John Selby has a wonderful book called "Seven Masters, One Path" that I have gained much relief with by practicing the unique, progressive meditation sequence he presents. It all starts with the breath, with breathing freely!

From awareness of our breathing we can fully access a calm mind. That's the second step of the seven-fold meditation! It only gets better and better through the rest of the steps!

In my sitting earlier this afternoon I noted: "breath by breath" (a breath-awareness version of "moment by moment"). There is a song I use to sing with others that began: "Breath by breath we breath the Lord ...". The song makes reference to John 20:22 for which I will quote, starting from verse 21:

Then Jesus said to them (his disciples) again, Peace be to you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you. (22:) And when He had said this, He breathed into them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit."

Not only is the breath intimately connected with our psyche it is connected with our spirit as well. Focusing on the breath brings awareness into this connection. The more awareness - the more the connection can be realized.

I find that especially true when there is conscious self-talk that can be interspersed between the breaths. Self-talk is something everyone does whether or not they realize it. Self-talk becomes a powerful tool for transformation when it is made conscious and our intention is to speak only the truth to ourselves.

May 11, 2015 -

last night at the market I walked down the isle with the magazines (for the first time in probably over a year or so) and after seeing covers with Mark Twain and then The Beatles (while noting some attraction) I glanced further and saw "Your Inner Voice" on the cover of Psychology Today (along with "What The Elite Want To Hide"). Picking up a copy and generally impressed with the subject matter I said to myself if it is in the $4 range I'll get it.

Now back home I have the zine in my lap. The feature article is by Pamela Weintraub. She writes: "Inner talk is one of the most effective, least-utilized tools available to master the psyche and foster success." I'm noting this especially here at Psyche & Health as the overall intention for the blog is this mastery!

According to Soviet psychologist Lev Vygotsky self-talk (AKA inner talk) is the ultimate social act! (At least is seems in regards to children.)

Neuroscientist Jason Moser and his electrodes recorded "psychic improvement" in one of his clinical studies on self-talk. The findings suggested to him that "exposure therapy" may be needless and he believes that more can be accomplished by changing one's self-talk. "It is like an automatic switch, in which the brain turns the self on and the brain turns the self off. It is programmed into us by our own evolution, built into us by language."

I believe the reference to turning the self on and off is worth further investigation.

Needless to say I'm interested in the budding "science of self-talk"!

I'll also add that I find "self-talk" is an active form of thinking that is capable of being spiritualized and thereby allowing us certain freedom. It accesses the source of personal transformation whereby our minds can be renewed. Scriptures speak of "self-talk" in forms of speaking and singing to yourself; making melody in your heart.
