A national debate on GMO's is needed

I have carried a vision for numbers of years that there will be a debate on GMO's that takes place at the AAAS annual conference. The Association for the Advancement of American Science, in my opinion, needs to advance beyond it current position that supports wholeheartedly Biotech GMO usage in the farm field as well as the anti-GMO labeling position.

I would like to dedicate this debate to Dr. Harvey W. Wiley M.D. He is the man called the father of the FDA. There are a number of links below to his book published in 1929 called A HIstory of Crimes Against the Food Law of 1906.

Had this Law's enforcement not been blocked...

Eminent officials of our Government would have escaped the indignation of outraged public opinion because they. permitted and encouraged these frauds on the public.

The cause of a wholesome diet would not have been put back for fifty or a hundred years. And last but least, this History of a Crime would never have been written.

Another Pro-GMO President?
Hillary Clinton. Former senator and secretary of state. Mother. Grandmother-to-be. Potential frontrunner for the Democratic nominee for U.S. president in 2016.

And Monsanto cheerleader.

From back in the days when she worked for the Rose Law Firm, which represented Monsanto, to her ongoing cozy relationships with pro-GMO appointees Michael Taylor (Deputy Commissioner for Foods) and Tom Vilsack (Secretary of Agriculture), Clinton has always pandered to the pesticide and junk food manufacturers.

She hasn't changed her tune—even though she's on the wrong side of the 93 percent of Americans (future voters) who want mandatory GMO labeling laws.

Last month, Clinton told the pro-GMOers at the BIO International Convention that the public is "misinformed" on the safety of GMO foods. Monsanto just needs to put a more positive spin on the mounting scientific evidence against GMO crops and GMO-contaminated foods, and voilà ! Consumers will no longer need to worry their pretty little heads.

It's time to tell Hillary: No amount of "spin" will convince consumers that Monsanto's toxic crops and food are good for public health and the environment.

And no candidate who cheerleads for Monsanto will get the vote of the millions of consumers who believe politicians should stop taking Monsanto's money, and start protecting the public.

TAKE ACTION: Hillary Clinton: It's time to dump Monsanto and support public health, and regenerative, organic agriculture!

Among the hundreds of editorial comments perhaps the most interesting are those made also by the Rocky Mountain News, Under the caption "The Borgias of Business."

"For 20 years, at least, the food poisoners of the country have waged warfare on Dr. Harvey W. Wiley and since the passage of the Pure Food Act in 1906 they have trebled efforts to have him discharged. These Borgias of business have won, for the circumstances attended Dr Wiley's recent resignation make it, in practical effect, a dismissal.

"Dr Wiley resigned because the fundamental principles of the Pure Food Law have been strangled; because he has been powerful to punish the manufacturers of misbranded and adulterated drugs and foods; and because the powers of his position had been nullified by executive orders.

"Dr. Wiley was only head of the Bureau of Chemistry, but there is every reason to believe that President Taft will find that Dr Wiley gave the position
an importance out of all proportion to its standing."

On June 30th, 1930 – twenty-four years after the passage of the act credited to him – Harvey Wiley passed away, leaving behind a historical memoir (The History of a Crime Against the Pure Food Law) that reflected upon the demise of his brainchild as follows:

If the Bureau of Chemistry has been permitted to enforce the law as it was written and as it tried to do, what would have been the condition now? No food product in our country would have any trace of benzoic acid, sulphurous acid or sulphites, or any alum or saccharin, save for medicinal purposes. No soft drink would contain caffein, or theobromine. No bleached flour would enter interstate commerce. Our foods and drugs would be wholly without any form of adulteration and misbranding. The health of our people would be vastly improved and their life greatly extended. The manufacturers of our food supply, and especially the millers, would devote their energies to improving the public health and promoting happiness in every home by the production of the whole ground, unbolted cereal flours and meals.

The resistance of our people to infectious diseases would be greatly increased by a vastly improved and more wholesome diet. Our example would be followed by the civilized world and thus bring to the whole universe the benefits which our own people had received.

Today marks the one-hundred-year birthday of the FDA. To celebrate, the FDA plans a gala event at the Harvey W. Wiley federal building. The FDA is touting Dr. Wiley as the “Father of the Pure Food and Drugs Act,” inviting his decedents to attend their event. The FDA is quite proud of the heritage Dr. Wiley has bestowed upon them.

Apparently, the FDA would like to forget what Dr. Wiley actually believed. He was an adamant supporter of a true organic food supply for the entire American public. It was the food industry that did not want this legislation, as they were more interested in foods adulterated with colorings and preservatives, a lower quality of food that posed health risks. Dr. Wiley believed that preservatives in food posed a serious health problem. He thought the regular intake of preservatives over the course of a lifetime was certain to be toxic and contribute to ill health. As he stated in his 1905 Congressional testimony:

“I think that the use of preservatives in food may be and often is overdone and that great harm may come from their excessive use….I say, as a plain business proposition, that the men who put preservatives in food had better stop for their own good and for the good of their business; and they will.”

「Upton Sinclair's book The Jungle had helped turn the tide in favour of the Pure Food and Drug Laws. ...

After he left government Dr. Wiley wrote a book telling the sordid story of how those laws have been scuttled from within government.

He knew where the bodies were buried, and he resolved to tell it all and let the American people get riled up again.

However, he was no politician.
Again he underestimated the forces arrayed against him.
Wiley, undertaking to finance his book, turned his precious manuscript over to a printer.
That manuscript mysteriously “disappeared” and has never been found to this day.

Just how these things are done is rarely uncovered.

Shattered but unbroken, Dr.Wiley valiantly returned to work, rewriting his book from scratch.

This chore occupied him totally for ten years.
He tried to update matters, but by 1929 many of his shocking revelations were already old hat.

Some of the villains were dead.

Most of the politicians had passed on or at least out of power.

Still,his volume The History of a Crime Against the Food Law was a primer on government corruption,
quite unlikely anything that has ever been written before.

This time, he tried to protect himself.
He took no chances on the manuscript getting lost again.

Every facet of its production and printing was personally supervised by Wiley.

When distribution began in 1929, it looked like a best seller, Books disappeared rapidly from bookstore shelves.

Yet no letter were received from readers, no congratulations, no kudos, and virtually no reviews.

The books kept on disappearing, yet copies could not be found anywhere.

In desperation, Dr. Wiley put the few remaining books in libraries around the countryーthey disappeared from libraries as quickly as had vanished from the stores.

It should surprise no one today that these things can happen, when advertising budget for one food conglomerate is larger than the entire annual budget of the government agency charged with policing the industry.

Dr. Wiley's valedictory on the last page of his expose was prophetic in 1929.
Today it is shattering....
