Climate Change and Human Extinction – A Personal Perspective with Professor Emeritus Guy McPherson
Peak Moment TV episode 262
Recorded February 23, 2014
Janaia Donaldson: Hi, Welcome to Peak Moment. I’m Janaia Donaldson. Late in 2012 we watched a video by Guy McPherson about climate chaos. I was stunned. I immediately called Guy to see if he could talk with us and I’m glad he’s here today. Thanks for joining us.
Guy is the Professor Emeritus of Natural Resources and the Environment at the University of Arizona for twenty years, a conservation biologist and an author of thirteen books including Walking Away from Empire and Going Dark. [turning to Guy] And your blog is Nature Bats Last. We’ll catch up on those things...So thank you, thank you for being here.
Guy McPherson: It’s my pleasure.
JD: I see you as an independent scientist at this point, not being beholden to a university, to an organization, to money, to government. You've taken on a rather daunting, Paul Revere-like calling to bring together the data on climate chaos that we aren’t seeing or that’s hidden away from the mainstream. Tell us what most of us don’t get to see.
GM: Well, I was twenty years in active service at the University of Arizona. I left about five years ago. And subsequently that has liberated me to pursue information in ways in which I didn't have time or cultural incentive to pursue when I was in active service. There’s a lot of self-censorship that goes on in this society and it happens in universities too—imagine that! Of course, I didn’t have time, interest, or inclination to pursue the kinds of information I’ve been pursuing since then.

FROM HIS BLOG
Only love remains
http://guymcpherson.com/2012/10/only-love-remains/
A decade ago, as I was editing a book on climate change, I realized we had triggered events likely to cause human extinction by 2030. Notwithstanding neoconservative talking points (aka lies) to the contrary, burning fossil fuels that accumulated over millions of years within the span of a couple centuries is having expectedly horrific impacts on the environment we share with millions of other species. Recognizing the horrors we’ve triggered, I mourned for months, to the bewilderment of the three people who noticed. Shortly thereafter, I was elated to learn about a hail-Mary pass that just might allow our persistence for a few more generations: Peak oil and its economic consequences might bring the industrial economy to an overdue close, just in time to allow our species to persist beyond another generation.
It’s been a rollercoaster ride since then. Oil priced at $147.27 back in 2008 nearly sent the world’s industrial economy into the abattoir. Close, but no life-ring. Even as increasingly dire data, models, and climate-change assessments roll in, politicians and central bankers have kept the wheels of industry churning. Although we’ve been in the midst of an economic depression for several years, atmospheric carbon dioxide levels keep rising to record-setting levels each year.
Finally, I surrender. We’re done. Homo colossus has tripped several positive-feedback triggers, any one of which leads to near-term human extinction. The combination is truly lethal.

Hello fellow concerned friend of the planet.
I'm working on a documentary project related to Dr Guy McPherson and his climate presentations. Guy's unique message of hope and compassion in a time of climate and environmental devastation is so needed now. He often quotes the naturalist, Edward Abbey, who said "Action is the antidote to despair." Guy has been active in sharing the critical science that the mainstream media refuses to talk about, and he's even left the ivory tower of academia to learn to live off of the land in a caring way and to teach others how to live a simpler life, and to prepare for economic and climate collapse. I'd love some support in getting his message out with this documentary.Any amount you can spare helps. When you donate please indicate if you wish to remain anonymous or are okay with honorable mention in the final product. Thanks! :)

SKY MOUNTAIN LOSS
San Diego County experienced many wildfires the week of May 11-18. Alden Hough and his family experienced a beautiful home burn down on their property at the Sky Mountain Institute near Harmony Grove. We had sweltering heat during the week. If it can get that hot in mid May, what can we expect during August? It was making me thing of Climate Change before I was introduced to GUy MacPherson.
