Day 3 - Water Fast by caa522 .....

Oh my goodness! Made it to day 3

Date:   5/7/2014 2:05:28 PM ( 10 y ago)

Woke up and weighed in at 135.6lbs and 31.2%BF

Before I forget, yesterday I went on Amazon and ordered some of these ketone/urinalysis stix. I have a medical background and sometimes I get too analytical with aches and pains with fasting.

This is what it checks for:
Measures 10 Different Components of Urine
Nitrites: may be a sign of urinary tract infection or other infection.
Leukocytes: aka white blood cells. Also indicates presence of infection.
Glucose: the most common test for diabetes.
pH: measures urine acidity, associated with higher risk for kidney stones.
Protein (albumin): tests for kidney function.
Ketones: caused by disorders of increased metabolism; also by unbalanced diets such as high protein/low carb, anorexia or fasting.
Specific gravity: evaluates the body's water balance and urine concentration.
Blood: can result from infection, injury, inflammation, kidney stones or cancer.
Bilirubin: could indicate liver or gallbladder problems such as gallstones, hepatitis, cirrhosis or tumors.
Urobilinogen: checks for liver disease.

I am just very interested in making sure that I am physically okay. I'm not sure how accurate this will be or results will be completely messed up because of fasting. There are a couple of things that always linger in my mind. When I have muscle cramping, like I feel depleted of minerals for normal muscle contraction relaxation (Mg, Ca, K). I wonder how that could be affecting the heart muscle. I am also wondering about my liver function. When I fast I notice I get the itchy hands and feet. Mostly with my hands. I remember this most bothersome with all my pregnancies. It is known as obstetric cholestasis. It means there is a reduced flow of bile down the bile ducts in the liver. Some bile then leaks out into the bloodstream, in particular the bile salts. These circulate in the bloodstream and can cause symptoms. Typically it is itching all over with the feet and hands being most affected. So tonight I felt it most. It's like I ate something i was allergic to like nuts or cheese except I haven't eaten for 48 hours. Well, if anything, having those urinalysis strips will at least serve as a distraction as well as hopefully let me know when my body is in ketosis. I'd like to see the results even after the fast. Okay that's plenty info considering it is only noon time. I am doing this day different and compiling a list of positive affirmations about this. I don't want to set myself up like I did in some previous fasts. When I get too wrapped up in feeling deprived I end up rebound eating too quickly and not with the good stuff. Like all rules out of the window. So today I will focus meditating and bathing my spirit with positive affirmations. I will try to stay in the present moment and be mindful. Much of fasting I can be trapped in the future. Thinking of what tomorrow will be like and whether I will hit my goal and eagerly anticipating refeeding.

I am feeling emotionally and mentally fragile right now so will take it easy. Good luck to you other fasters.

4:14pm
I feel tired and have a mild headache, with a dry mouth coated tongue feel. Oh and I'm sure my breath wreaks. Well, I was just going through the mail and got some food coupons. I just cannot cook dinner tonight so it will be fast food. Looking at coupons for Jack-In-The-Box, baja fresh, and souplantation I feel a strong craving. But I am all too familiar with this battle and have to nip it in the bud. Drink water, tea, mineral water, sleep, meditate/pray, garden, walk, watch TV...gotta go through my list of things to do when temptation arises.

11pm
The headache and difficulty sleeping continues. Also, significant increased urination. I'm sure that's from going into ketosis. Well, I just got confirmation that this Saturday my husband is having an intimate dinner get together with the 8-10 directors and spouses at work. I know it will be ridiculous if I went and didn't eat or drink anything but water. This is important to my husband and don't want to mess that up. Then Sunday, we have a family get together for my husband's side for Mother's day and 2 birthdays. So, I am having to complete Day 3 and end at that.

When I go on a fast/cleanse I usually give myself a range of days I hope to do but not everything is cut and dried. I have 4 kids and a large extended family. Between cooking, parties, events, and family get-togethers it is not always easy to block out your schedule to do this. People don't always understand water fasting and some cultures, like the one I come from will think it insane. I am comfortable completing 3 days this time. The more experience I have under my belt, the healthier I am and the more knowledgeable I am about this whole process. I feel there is less resistance from me mentally and emotionally with each attempt. I personally feel more comfortable doing many more short fasts of 3-6 days than one long one. Maybe one day it will just naturally happen and I'll get to do an extended one. I like to listen to my body and get cues so I am comfortable and have a positive experience. Too many people in my home are affective each time I do a fast and that too is an important consideration.
