Intro

A landmark conference--Permaculture Voices, March 13-16, 2014-- will take place in Southern California near Temecula, at the Pechanga Resort and Casino. While some guests will be putting currency into slots and betting on the tables, in another section of the Hotel, an estimated 300-600 or more will be making other bets--betting on the return of a system of Permanent Agriculture that fits more with the earth then the system we have now.

Chemical and GMO farming from the perspective of Mother Earth are not here to stay. They cannot. They are not in sync with the soul needs of humanity. That need is to express our deepest dreams, and dreams grow from seed dreams and literal seeds that we plant in soil.

The conference will feature some very loud Voices as keynotes that include names that are already well known. Aside from this, there will be many speakers, but one of the present voices helping sponsor what I would like to see as many future Permaculture Voices conferences, will be representatives from the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company, and its western outpost, The Petaluma Seed Bank.

This fall, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, will host its fourth annual National Heirloom Expo in Santa Rosa. This year, at both the Natural Heirloom Expo March 6-9, in Anaheim, and at the Permaculture Voices Conference at Pechanga, Paul Wallace, one of my favorite Real Food and Seed Heroes will be present.

Paul, during the National Heirloom Expo, keeps a smile on his face as best he can. That smile runs deep and is inspired by his deep belief in humanity and its heirloom seeds.

Paul, and I, are believers in a concept that I know will be growing. The concept is that Seeds in the past, and in the future, are a reliable currency we can count on. The growing seed collection, gathered by Jere Gettle, his family, and staff worldwide, represent the foundation of Biodiverse culture as we know it today.

Many people have not yet connected the dots. Culture and agriculture go together. The Heirloom Seeds--many developed by nature with a little help perhaps from the forces that weave the deep stories that make one tribe different from another, are at the root of permanent agriculture.

This conference Permaculture Voices is just about that, creating a gathering where make sense voices will be heard that address solutions for the madness that many of us read about in the newspapers, while others--Permaculture Voices are busy in their gardens, landscaping and moving earth elements with a grand purpose in mind--bringing people back in sync with nature.

I watched the makings of this young movement taking root a some months back at a permaculture Convergence at the Sky Mountain Institute, where Aldon Hough, offered many workshops for students who pitched in to create
landscape modifications to capture road runoff and redirect it into a holding pond. Permaculture has a vocabulary that was new to me--but I understood the principles.

To quote Paul Wallace--who both directs the Petaluma Seed Bank and the National Heirloom Expo, "I call it progressive Regression. People used to think of the Bank as the Pillar of the community. Now it's this store. Seeds were the currency of the past, and they sen to be the currency of the future."

WHAT IS "PERMACULTURE?"
PERMACULTURE IS A WORD AND PRACTICE THAT BELONGS IN YOUR EVERYDAY VOCABULARY AND SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE

Permaculture Defined by Bill Mollison

Permaculture (permanent agriculture) is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and nonmaterial needs in a sustainable way. Without permanent agriculture there is no possibility of a stable social order.

Permanent design is a system of assembling conceptual, material, and strategic components in a pattern which functions to benefit life in all its forms.

The philosophy behind permaculture is one of working with, rather than against. nature; of protracted and thoughtful observation rather than protracted and thoughtless action; of looking at systems in all their functions, rather than asking only one yield of them; and of allowing systems to demonstrate their own evolutions."--Bill Mollision, from the back cover of an original edition of "Permaculture: A Designer's Manual."
