Note that this trailer represents an early version of the project formerly titled 'Saving Seed'. Look for an updated version that includes New York State subjects such as the Hudson Valley Seed Library in November 2011.

Our civilization runs on seeds. Foods from asparagus to zucchini and products from fabric to fuels nourish and sustain us. ‘Open sesame’ were the two magic words that unlocked the door to the robber’s cave in Ali-Baba and the Forty Thieves (sesame seeds burst when mature). We live in a period when the door to common seed access may close forever. Corporations have transformed seeds from common resources to patented commodities. Seeds have become intellectual property: the proprietary software behind food. Hundreds of indigenous seed varieties are being lost, seed companies enforce new contracts, internal corruption exists within seed vaults, and GMO seed contamination present grave challenges.

Open Sesame! takes a boldly original look at our global seed supply through the cultural lens of the open source movement. The final form of the project will be an experimental documentary and cross-platform project that brings the concept to life through innovative incorporation of sound, art, image, found footage and story.
