Order Seeds from Baker Creek Now
Had a twenty minute conversation just now with Chandra at the order desk of Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds.
I highly recommend sending your seed purchasing dollar in the direction of this company that donated 160,000 packages of Non GMO Seeds to the CA Right to Know, Label GMO's Campaign in 2012. When the scorecard came up November 6, election day in California, and the No to Labeling appeared to outvote the Right to Know, some interpreted this as a loss. For many of us, who were part of this People's Initiative, we achieved victory. The GMO conversation is now more widely known.
Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds is in the middle of this GMO Conversation. This company, that represents more than 1400 heirloom varieties of seeds, tests for GMOs--Genetically Modified Organisms. They do not sell GMO Seeds.
I asked Chandra a number of questions and she gave me some good answers.
My Background with Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds
Paul Wallace, head of the Petaluma Seed Bank, Baker Creek store in Petaluma, CA, with Leslie Goldman Your Enchanted Gardener (that's me!) a few days before the 2nd Annual National Heirloom Expo 2012.
I began the conversation explaining my relationship to Baker Creek. I was a teacher at the Second Annual National Heirloom Expo, September 11-12-13 in Santa Rosa, CA. The National Heirloom Expo is organized by Baker Creek.

QUESTIONS
Are Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds Organic?
Spoke to Paul Wallace just now. He clarified further the question of Certification of Organic Seeds. The Certified Organic standard is set up by the US Government. Most Organic farmers will get their seeds from a organic seed seller that is certified, however, however, if an organic farmer cannot get a certified organic seed from an organic seller, they can grow a Baker Creek Heirloom Seed and call it organic.
cannot get a seed from them, they are allowed to grow Baker Creek specializes in rare seeds from more than 70 countries.
These are non patented, open pollenated, heirloom seeds. They are sourced from 70 countries.
Baker Creek is a relatively small seed company, and if it had a Certified Organic Label, it would have to have a separate facility for the rare seeds that they cannot move through the certification process.
Many of them--can't be certified through US Standards, and Baker Creek would have to have a separate facility for the seeds that are Certified Organic.
If an organic farmer makes an effort to find one of their rare seeds, and cannot find them through a company that has this seed listed as organically certified, they can grow the rare heirloom seed and call it organic if that is the method of farming that they use.
FROM CHANDRA, AT THE CALL CENTER IN MISSOURI
use natural methods of farming without chemical fertilizers.
Baker Creek are Open Pollenated Heirloom Seeds. They are tested to be Non GMO. Heirloom seeds, when planted according to the instructions, will reproduce the same as the parent seed.
Hybrid seeds will not do this.
The Organic Rule is now being assaulted both on the National level as well as the state level. in Missouri, according to Chandra, their is a bill that has already passed through one house of the legislature to protect modern forms of farming, in other words, GMO farming.
The large Agro Companies are pushing to have GMO practices included within Organic Growing Methods.
Baker Creek is upholding a standard through protecting the Heirloom Varieties.
