Prop 37--The Grassroots Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered Food will Ultimately Win its goal. Corporate Heads are coming to the Talking Table four months after Nov 6--Voting Day in California-- because of Concern for further loss of Profit Margin. A Grassroots Movement --Fueled by Will, Unsung Heroes, and Many Voices; and funded by Leaders in NON GMO, Organic, and Fair Trade, ultimately drove grocery manufacturers to decide it would be in their best interest to back National Labeling of GMO’s. Many of us, who worked for the YES on Prop 37 side, were working for ideals, as well as concern for the evolutionary fate of all people. For me, I saw Prop 37 as a step to restore the ideas in the song America The Beautiful, and as an important step to Win Back Our Sacred Seeds. This is from that story from the New York Times, January 31, 2013, about four Months after 3.4 Million Votes YES on Prop 37:

Executives from PepsiCo, ConAgra and about 20 other major food companies, as well as Wal-Mart and advocacy groups that favor labeling, attended a meeting in January in Washington... The inclusion of Wal-Mart has buoyed hopes among labeling advocates that the big food companies will shift away from tactics like those used to defeat Proposition 37 in California last fall, when corporations spent more than $40 million to oppose the labeling of genetically modified foods.

“They spent an awful lot of money in California — talk about a lack of return on investment,” said Gary Hirshberg, co-chairman of the Just Label It campaign, which advocates national labeling, and chairman of Stonyfield, an organic dairy company.

Instead of quelling the demand for labeling, the defeat of the California measure has spawned a ballot initiative in Washington State and legislative proposals in Connecticut, Vermont, New Mexico and Missouri, and a swelling consumer boycott of some organic or “natural” brands owned by major food companies.

Genetic Changes to Food May Get Uniform Labeling

Since food companies collectively spent over $45 million to stop Prop 37, California’s GMO labeling law, it’s hard to believe that they — and Walmart in particular — would turn around and push for a federal GMO labeling standard. But a trickle of reports, aspects of which we’ve now confirmed, suggests just such a turnabout.

Playing a state-by-state game of whack-a-mole with grassroots groups trying to pass laws across the country (as is occurring in Washington state, Vermont, New Mexico, and Connecticut) may simply have become too exhausting and costly for these companies. If so, such an about-face would vindicate GMO opponents’ strategy of a direct appeal to consumers. GMO-labeling advocates may have succeeded in beginning to drive a wedge between biotechnology seed companies, like Monsanto and Syngenta, and the food companies that have to sell what’s produced with their wares.

On February 5, Jeffrey M. Smith, announced that his film "Genetic Roulette," The Gamble of our lives, had won the Aware Guide's award for Top Transformational Film of the year.

More than 30 films were in the the vote. "Genetic Roulette" was the runaway leader because many who voted YES on 37 voted for it. They saw the importance of this film winning.

I DE CLARE that "Genetic Roulette" is not only the Top Transformational Film of 2012, but it is the Most Important Documentary Film of The Year.

I would like to see these signs at the Academy Awards in Hollywood in March.
