A Tribute to Dr. Andrew Weil's True Food Concept

"I believe
the day is coming
when all doctors
will be routinely
trained in
integrative mediicine."
--Andrew Weil M.D.
We do not have a health care system in America.
We have a disease Management system."--Dr. Andrew Weil M.D.
Dr, Mimi Guarneri, MD, (L) a woman represents to me the heart of Integrative Medicine, with Dr. Andrew Weil, MD, Keynote at the 10th Scripps Integrative Medicine Conference, Wed, March 30-Feb 2, 2013 at the Hilton San Diego Resort. Returning to this site was a healing experience for me after six weeks of lessons learning about my immune system and its limits.
I HEARD DR. ANDREW WEIL M.D. SPEAK FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY SCRIPPS CENTER FOR INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE CONFERENCE
The Conference was called Natural Supplements: An Evidence- Based Update. Sunday following his Keynote, I found myself walking through the JR Organic Stall at the HIllcrest Farmers' Market, wanting to put in images what I consider True Food. For me, True Food is Food as Medicine.
It is Organically grown. That means as I see it, no steps have been missed. There is care for the soil. The ideal Organic Farmer in my estimation is local. His food not only comes from within a short distance of the farmers' market, but he is more concerned with nutrition per ace more than profit per ace.
years ago, at the Organic Center VIP Banquet, I sat near Dr. Weil and his staff. That was the year that I encouraged JR Organic's Joe Rodriguez Jr to bring freshly picked fragrant strawberries to the Natural Product Expo West.
I was also promoted a document called, "A Love Letter to Joe The Farmer." These are images of Food Grown Out by Joe Rodriguez Jr, of the Fifth Generation Rodriguez Family, taking February 3, 2013.
Dr. Weil pointed out that Medicine, in the minds of many people today, has come to be equated with taking Pharmaceutical Drugs.
He also introduced in his talk a new "Hero" of mine, Daphne Miller, author of the book "Farmacology," and 'The Jungle Effect: Healthiest Diets from Around the World--Why They Work and How to Make Them Work for You" [Paperback]
This lettuce, organic and locally grown by the Fifth Generation Rodriguez Family, was in the ground 24 hours before it was for sale at the Hillcrest Farmers Market. Fresh food is healing food. Food as Medicine is at the core of the Soul of Integrative Medicine. Dr. Weil suggested tearing lettuce leaf off the stem, soaking in cold water for ten minutes, and then tearing it into even smaller pieces to release health giving properties. He said these properties continue to strengthen in the frig for a number of days. The 11th Anniversary conference sponsored by the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine was at the Hilton San Diego Resort. in 2005, I created three days of organic lunches at this Resort for the International Feng Shui Conference. Chef Herman Schieffer of the Hilton shopped the Farmers' Market with me. We served JR Lettuce. Herman is still in charge of the kitchen.
As we move toward a mature Integrative Medicine, I want to put in my two cents: Food as Medicine will outweigh the power and ability of any Bill made in the lab to bring health.
One thing stuck out about this very special man: He cooks. He said he prepared food many times even with alone. What an act of love.
He also grows some of his own Food. This is the centerpiece of my own project called, "Grow A healthier Pizza." We will never cross the finish line with ends GMO Proliferation until we create an educated body of Eminent Gardeners who have vital minerals in them that are biochemically alive and have come up from soil that has been well tended.
.
The Earth and the Soul are Soilmates. That is one of my Enchanted Garden Teachings I would like to share with the nurses and doctors who enter Integrative Medicine.
"I can't believe I ate the Whole Thing!" was a popular line for an Alka Seltzer commercial of my teens.
We have lost more knowledge of Food as Medicine, that Most doctors will ever hear in the classroom today, but we need to begin somwhere.
Let us begin here. Feel these images. They are my gift to you!--

GOT A COLD?
WHICH DO YOU CHOOSE?
MUSHROOM GINGER SOUP OR OPIOD-DERIVED COUGH SUPPRESSANT + PSEUDOEPHEDRINE ( A CLOSE COUSIN TO METHAMPHETAMINE) FOR A LATE SPRING TIME COLD?
I have made my choice:
LOOKS LIKE DR ANDREW WEIL HAS TURNED ME IN THE DIRECTION OF A JEWEL--DR DAPHNE MILLER M.D.

We made the soup, February 6, 2013
By Daphne Miller
Special to The Washington Post
Tuesday, May 26, 2009
"Just a cold? I thought I was dying." Martha sounded irritated.
She had hustled the kids off to day care and skipped work, clearly expecting to hear that something more dramatic was brewing than a late springtime cold. But what motivated her visit to my office, I realized, was not the infection itself as much as the dizzying array of symptoms caused by her self-administered treatments: The fatigue and stomach pain appeared to intensify with each dose of opioid-derived cough suppressant she chugged; as for her headache, dry mouth and racing heart, they coincided suspiciously with a decongestant that contained pseudoephedrine (a close cousin to methamphetamine).
--
Bolstered by a growing body of data and my own clinical experience, I opened my electronic medical record and entered a prescription that would give Martha relief without more side effects: mushroom ginger soup. The recipe sits right there on my screen, one click below morphine and one above mycostatin.--Dr. Daphne Miller MD, author of 'The Jungle Effect: Her forthcoming book is "Farmacology." Dr. Weil said the book draws out the relationship between the soil and gut.

I found this on the Washington Post here:
DR DAPHNE MILLER MD
from her website:
Dr. Miller founded her Integrative medical practice in 2000 in order to focus on the whole person and to incorporate a blend of conventional and alternative healing approaches. She believes that her most valuable work as a physician occurs when she helps patients to discover their innate power to optimize their health. Dr. Miller is also an Associate Professor at the University of California San Francisco where she teaches nutrition and integrative medicine.
A graduate of Brown University and Harvard Medical School, she did her medical residency at the University of California, San Francisco where she also completed a two-year NIH-funded research fellowship. Her formal nutrition training includes a two-year Bravewell Scholarship at Andrew Weil’s Program in Integrative Medicine which is based at the University of Arizona. She is a long-time student of Iyengar yoga and often incorporates yoga into her therapeutic treatment plans.

Maitake, Grifola frondosa
Though this mushroom doesn't carry the same distinguished traditional reputation of shiitake and reishi, it may be valuable in the fight against HIV. At an International Conference on AIDS in Amsterdam, maitake was reported to inhibit the HIV virus in vitro. While the mushroom doesn’t kill the HIV virus in humans, it may help as part of a total integrated medicine program. Some Japanese research even suggests that maitake may provide stronger immune-enhancing properties than the previous mushrooms listed.--

You Can Master Disease by Dr. Bernard Jensen<
This is classic Foundation study for any doctor who wants to understand the foundations of Integrative Medicine as reflected in Nature. Dr. Bernard Jensen (1908-2001) is one of the voices who studied with the MD of his time when he was a youth. Those mastered will be remembered. Numbers of them are remembered in my forthcoming books, "Grow A Healthier Pizza," and "Getting Hip" My Commitment to to Help Modern Health Care "Get Hip " to All it Can Be Through My Getting Hip Revisions.
