Food As Medicine with Dr. Gordon Saxe at Casa De Luz
Holistic Integrative Medicine
Optimal wellness is possible through science, compassion, healthy lifestyle changes, and global healing traditions.
Food Is Medicine
Most doctors have no formal training in dietary nutrition and routinely prescribe pills and procedures as their medicine of choice. But a new movement within the medical community is focusing on food as medicine.
Dr. Gordon Saxe, founding member and director of research at UCSD’s Center for Integrative Medicine, is leading the charge.
“We tell patients how to change their diet so that the food itself can address and hopefully reverse the disease process,” explains Dr. Saxe. “We were not evolved to eat mass amounts of meat and sugar, and the effect of this has become a primary driver of major chronic diseases that are bankrupting our medical system. A whole-food, plant-based diet is more or less what humans are meant to eat.”
And now the Center for Integrative Medicine has a community dining partner, Casa de Luz in North Park, where patients or those interested in preventive action can eat three organic, whole-food, plant-based meals a day. “Having a place to send patients for natural cooking classes and meals, that supports them in their lifestyle changes, makes a huge difference,” say Dr. Saxe. “It also helps us to do research and to look at health outcomes in those who make these dietary changes. ” The Center for Integrative Medicine also offers Natural Healing Experiential Cooking Series at Casa de Luz, designed by Dr. Saxe as preventive medicine or to address various health issues so you can truly reap the benefits
